For the rest of the night until the sun rose we sat in silence. Exchanging words only when it was absolutely necessary. We had nothing to say. The only words that could be spoken would make the grief that sank our hearts hurt even worse. At some point during the night Harlow fell asleep. I was glad that at least he was able to escape what our life had come to even if only for a short amount of time.
Felix and I didn't know what the next step was. Even though Luna Sandra had told us to run and not turn back, we both knew that we needed to go back. If there were any survivors from our family we had to help them as much as we could. We didn't yet know the full extent of what the attack was. While we tried to be optimistic we knew that there was a low chance of our parents being alive. My dad being the beta and Felix's dad being the head pack warrior would have been the first targets that the Blood Moon had. They would try and weaken the pack from the top down.
We both knew that our fathers would not have done what any captain of a boat would do. If the boat is going down then we are going down with it. They would not have abandoned ship when things got hard. They wouldn't have done what Felix and I had decided to do. That is a decision that I am going to feel the guilt for for the rest of my life.We had no reason to survive. We were no better or no worse than any other person in our pack and yet here we are today. We are alive and as far as we know the rest of our family is dead.
Dark thoughts matched the weather outside. It had started to pour rain and the wind had started to blow. It was bitterly cold out. We could see our breath float away in the air. To try and hide it we breathed into our shirts. What an end to a horrible day it would be if we were found and killed because someone saw our breath.
I could only feel the guilt that consumed me. The guilt that I had abandoned my family. That I had let Faye down and now she was dead. She had trusted me, relied on me, since my dad put her in my arms earlier tonight. He told me to protect them and I had failed him within only a few hours. I had let Faye get away from me and let a wolf attack her. Kill her.
I sat in Feliz's arms until the sun rose. When the sun began to shine I felt worse. This had not all been a nightmare that would disappear alongside the moon. No, we were left to live the rest of this life and whatever it had to offer.
As soon as the sun woke, so did Harlow. We didn't know how long we should wait before returning home. We didn't know how long the Blood Moon pack would be there, but we didn't want to wait too long as to leave those who were still alive, suffering. We decided to leave when the sun reached its peak.
Felix led the way only a dozen or so paces ahead of us, but he was on the lookout. He was going to let us know if anything was coming at us or if we needed to turn back and hide for a bit longer. We walked slowly as to not draw attention to ourselves. We stopped frequently to listen for any sounds. There was nothing to be heard. Not a bird singing nor an owl hooting. It was quiet.
As we approached what we used to call Blue Road what should have been as easy to navigate as the back of my hand was unrecognizable. For a moment I felt afraid that we had stumbled across foreign ground, but as we got closer I knew I was wrong. From the storm earlier this morning there had been a little flooding. A small stream had formed and ran through the forest. The stream was red. It was tainted with the blood of my family.
No longer were there any words to boost one anothers spirits. A blood filled river seemed sign enough that we were walking into a graveyard. We followed the stream until it led us to the battlefield. What had used to be my backyard. There were bodies covering the ground. Countless bodies. People we knew and loved were littering the ground like trash. No one had taken care of the bodies. Smoke and lingering flames that were dying out filled the pack house.
