I woke up Monday morning in a panic. Afraid that I'd miss my alarm or oversleep- which is exactly what ended up happening. Except, it wasn't my fault. It was Lauren's job to wake both of us up; that's how it worked.
She ended up sneaking back inside the house around 5 a.m. on Saturday and slept in until 3 in the afternoon. It caused her sleeping schedule to scatter all over the place hence why she didn't wake up this time.
In a hurry, we both ran to the car. There was complete silence on our way to school. I couldn't stop thinking about Ariana, our last conversation, and if we were going to make it in time for class. Lauren was still in recovery. Alcohol was not her friend and she was extremely sensitive.
When we walk into class, a few people stare, as there was literally 5 seconds left until the bell was going to ring. I immediately start for my seat, completely ignoring Lauren and any of her needs.
I make it to my seat, out of breath.
"Thought you wouldn't show" I hear a voice from the left side of the room.
I turn to face Ariana, who's smirking
while copying down something from the board."I overslept" I admit.
"Do you not know how to work an alarm clock?" She teases
Before I could respond, the bell rings and Mr. Smith walks over to the board. Slightly annoyed that I didn't get to talk to Ariana more, I slouch in my seat, eagerly waiting for him to shut up already.
"Good morning seniors" He states, in a giddy mood.
The entire class groans. Everyone half asleep.
"The assignment for this week will involve the human brain. I know it's not ideal but for your project, you are to understand and interpret how different influences may affect the brain and it's function. Sounds kind of fun, right?" He laughs, "This is a week long project and requires two people to a group. You've all been here long enough to know how this goes. I'll be at my seat if anyone needs me" He then walks away.
Suddenly, people lift their heads up from their desks and begin talking to each other. The class turns from scarily quiet to annoyingly loud.
I then feel a hand brush against my arm. I turn to face Ariana. I had a feeling she was already thinking what I was thinking.
I mentally cheer from excitement. This was my chance to get closer to her.
"You got a partner?" She asks
I'd usually team up with Lauren when it came to school projects, but that was only because I didn't want to do it with anyone else. This year was different. Everything was different.
"I don't think so" I respond while eyeing Lauren from a distance. She wasn't paying much attention, on her phone per usual.
"Great!" She smiles, "You want to work on our project after school?"
"I have track practice, and so do you. Remember?" I laugh.
"Yeah.. about that.." She shoots me an apologetic expression, "I couldn't give it a week. Sorry! There's just nothing I hate more than running"
Although I was bummed that I wouldn't see her at practices, I was almost grateful that she wouldn't be there. It was my last year of track at this school which meant I had to give it my A game if I wanted any colleges to recruit me. With Ariana there, I wouldn't be able to give it my best effort, or even focus for that matter.
"Aw" I shoot her a disappointed look, "Really? That's a shame. Won't your mom be mad?"
Ariana laughs, "I told her I'd give it a week. 3 more days and it'll be one. I'll just lie to her." She shrugs her shoulders, "It's no big deal"
