Black.

You look black
But are you truly?
You have brown skin
But can you speak?
Even through those dark eyes
What is it that you see?

To long for the sea?
It's unnatural,
Is that where you belong?
A black mermaid -
Isn't it unusual?

Perhaps it's a curse
Misplaced, missing, lost
Between two worlds, you thirst
For the answers to a multitude
Of painful questions
And of all that you are
It is your brown skin which is always seen first.

Wondering if it is a punishment,
You cry out to the heavens,
Yet your only reply
Comes from the scorching globe above
Leaving you more brown than before.

If God is incapable of imperfection
Why is your complexion
Valued least out of all the flavours?
Chocolate was made to be sweet
But your heart is heavy with bitterness

Sad brown child,
Who are you?
You never smile,
Why so blue?
Is it that you look black
Yet, you can't speak
Even through your dark eyes
You still cannot see.
