When I made it to the front door, the setting sun shown a bit of light to the note that was wedged into the door frame. I pulled it out and on the front, it read:

Stella,

Tomorrow I have you booked for your ATV excursions on the island's mountain with Jason! He will meet you at the cabin to show you how to ride the ATVs. Have fun, be safe, and I can't wait for you to tell me all about it! Goodnight and sweet dreams, ipo.

Matthew

The side of my lip curled into a smile as I folded the note and unlocked the door to get in. I was excited to be able to ride an ATV again. Granted I was rusty and was going to need a crash course from the frightening man named Jason, but that didn't kill my joy.

My vacation was officially starting and without the looming glare of work on my back, I could enjoy it willingly. I ate a quick frozen meal, showered, and got ready for bed. Once I placed my silk bonnet and matching sleeping mask on, I was ready to transcend into dreamland.

RING, RING!

GODAMMIT! The ring was similar to the house phone downstairs in the kitchen but another dial phone was going off in the bedroom on the nightstand beside my face. Who could be calling me at this time of the night! I picked up the phone and placed the receiver to my ear.

"Hello?!"

Silence.

"HELLO?! I'm hanging up!"

"There's earplugs, a helmet, and glasses in the shed. Bring them tomorrow," Jason's gruff voice finally appeared on the other end of the phone. I quickly sat up in the bed and shoved the eye mask to the top of my head.

"Oh, O-okay. What about some knee pads? Water? Is there anything in the shed for you that I should bring? What about-"

Dial tone.

The bastard hung up on me! I recalled the number hoping that he would answer so that I could cuss him out while I was in my black woman element, but he didn't pick up. I tossed and turned in the bed, trying to get comfortable in the sheets, but I was irritated with Jason once again.

"He is getting too comfortable with disrespectin' me, nah. What God told him that he could have the last word of this conversation. I swear if I wasn't a respectable lady, I would tag his ass with a skillet of hot grease."

The night had come and gone like a flash. I woke up with such urgency and quickly got myself ready in less than 15 minutes; which in fact was a record-breaker for me. I ran downstairs to the shed and rummaged through a worn cardboard box labeled "ATV MISC" in bold black writing. I found a new pack of orange earplugs, a matching colored helmet, and safety glasses that Jason had wanted me to bring.

This was all new to me with all the protective gear. Back at home, I was used to my grandpapa sticking my 10-year-old self on top of a 4-Wheeler bare, with no gear, and sent me on my way. Not even a pair of kneepads was given to me.

I made sure to eat some hard boiled eggs and drink a ton of water before Jason came with the ATVs. I didn't want to pass out, and I definitely didn't want to do so in front of Jason. I wanted to go into this day confident, and not reliant on Jason's supervision because of my prior experience. "I'm a pretty young thang, but I know how to handle my own" kind of attitude.
