It was a Monday morning and it was Matthew's first day at McKinley High School. He was a genius and so got moved up until he was moved to High School. Finn woke early and proceeded to Matthew's bedroom to get him ready. When the door of his room creaked open, Matthew yawned and rubbed his eyes. Finn found this adorable and his heart filled at the sight. "Hey sweetie, morning." Finn said in a hushed voice. "Morning Finny." Matthew replied in a sleepy voice. As he said this, he held out his small hands wanting to be picked up. Finn delightedly complied and lifted him in his arms, kissing his head.
Finn took Matthew downstairs for breakfast, bouncing him on his hip making cute giggles spill out of Matthew's mouth as he did so. Pouring himself some cornflakes, Finn asked Matthew, "Excited for your first day at High School?" "Yes, weally excited." Matthew said with his adorable lisp.
Half an hour later, Finn has got Matthew dressed and had his teeth cleaned and were now going out the door. Finn lifted Matthew into his car and buckled him into his booster seat on the passenger side. Getting into the car, Finn pushed in Matthew's favourite musical theatre CD's. Up first was Les Misérables, Finn sung with Matthew on all of the duets and during "A Little Fall of Rain", Finn sung as Marius and Matthew sung Éponine's part. Matthew loves singing with and hearing Finn sing. Finn thought Matthew sung like an angel and had one of the best voices he had ever heard.
Upon arriving at school, Finn lifted Matthew out of the car and took his small hand into his own and held it as he led him to the reception. There, Finn directed Matthew through the many corridors of McKinley High and showed him his first class. It was Spanish with Finn's favourite teacher, Mr Schuester. Finn knocked and Mr Schue came out into the corridor closing the door behind him. "Hey Mr Schue, this is my younger brother, Matthew." Mr Schue kneeled down to Matthew's height. "Well, it's a pleasure to finally meet you, your brother has told me so much about you." Mr Schue held out his hand for Matthew to shake. Finn was surprised when he shook it as Matthew normally didn't trust new people, ever since their father died. Matthew hugged Finn goodbye and didn't want to let go. "Sweetie, I'll miss you too but we'll see each other at break. Finny needs to go to class." After one more embrace and a kiss on the forehead from Finn, Matthew allowed Mr Schue to take his hand and led him into the classroom.
The one thing Matthew noticed about the classroom was that most of the people in it were tall, taller than Finn. Matthew got frightened and held onto Mr Schue's hand tighter. " Hola clase," Mr Schue said to the class. "We have a new student in class, his name's Matthew Hudson and his older brother is Finn Hudson. If you would like to take a seat next to Mister Anderson." Mr Schue said, knowing Matthew would get on well with Blaine. Making his way tentatively to his seat through the giant teens staring at him, Matthew whimpered slightly and dashed to his chair. He climbed up it and took out his unicorn pencil case from his backpack neatly packed by Finn the evening before. Blaine looked at Matthew and said in a kind voice "Hi Matthew, I'm Blaine, it's a pleasure to meet you." Mr Schue had been right that Matthew would get along well with Blaine. "Hewwo Blaine, nice to meet you. I like your hair and bow tie." Matthew remarked innocently. "Thank you Matthew, that's so sweet." Blaine pulled his chair closer to Matthew and whispered "I'm so sorry about what happened to your daddy. Your big brother told me the other day." At hearing this, Matthew gasped back a tentative "Thank you" before his big brown eyes welled with tears and buried his face in his hands. Blaine pulled Matthew into a warm hug and lifted him into his arms and onto his lap, wrapped his strong arms around him and rubbed his hands up and down his back soothingly. "I'm sorry." Matthew said, embarrassed. "It's ok, it's ok." Blaine spoke into his hair as Matthew snuggled closer into Blaine's warm chest. Matthew trusted Blaine, he liked the way that he cared for him, looked after him and hugged him whenever Finn wasn't there.
At break, Matthew spotted Finn with some other footballers, he didn't want to embarrass Finn so he stayed back a while. Finn looked confused and concerned. He walked over to his brother and knelt down. "What's wrong buddy, why won't you come over?" Finn inquired. "I didn't want to embarrass you in front of your friends." Matthew said looking at his shoes and shuffling his feet anxiously. "You could never embarrass me, I love you too much. Why don't you come and meet everyone?" Finn asked. Matthew nodded and Finn proceeded to pick him up and carry him to the table with his other friends. Matthew buried his head into Finn's neck and nestled there. "Don't be shy, they're all really nice. This one is Noah Puckerman, but you can call him Puck." Finn explained as he brought Matthew towards a jock with a mohawk. "Nice to meet you little dude." Puck said, holding out his fist for a fist bump which Matthew returned with his own tiny one. "This one is Mike Chang." Finn said once again carrying Matthew to another jock. "Hey there." Mike said. At that moment, Finn's girlfriend Quinn, the head cheerleader, came over. "Finn, you said we were going to sit together this lunch! Where were you?" She shouted. Finn gave an apologetic look to his friends and asked "Could you look after Matthew for a while please?" Finn asked. "Of course, we'd be happy to." Mike replied, pleased to get to know the little boy better. Finn passed Matthew over into Mike's strong arms and started to walk away. "Where's Finny going?" Matthew asked in a hushed voice as he shifted into a comfortable position in Mike's arms. "He just needs to sit with his girlfriend for a bit, don't worry, buddy, he'll be back soon. But in the meantime, we'll have fun together." Mike answered. "Ok," mumbled Matthew a small smile appearing on his face. "Now little man, let's introduce you to the others." Mike went on to carry Matthew to the other two players of the football team sitting at the table, Sam Evans and Matt Rutherford.
Finn returned a while later and Matthew was fast asleep in Mike's arms, his head nestled into Mike's neck, the other three "awwwing" at the cuteness. Mike returned his tiny body into Finn's loving arms. Matthew began to stir and Finn whispered, "Hey honey, you fell asleep on Mike's lap. Did you miss having a nap at school?" "Sorry Finny. I really like your friends." Matthew said. "Don't worry, it's fine, they really like you too." Finn laughed. When passing through the empty corridors, Matthew noticed a sign up sheet on the notice board. It was for the new Glee Club, called New Directions. Matthew reached out and Finn stopped, "You want to audition hun?" Finn asked. Matthew nodded and picked up the pen hanging from a string. He signed his name with a flourish and put it back. Auditions will be at lunch.
Matthew couldn't wait to audition and he waited patiently in his next two classes before lunch. Now he had time to think of an audition song. Wicked? Les Mis? An idea sparked in his head. Miss Saigon - "I'd Give My Life for You"
It was time. Matthew met Finn outside his final class and they walked hand in hand down the corridor to the auditorium. Matthew suddenly felt a rush of nerves fill him. He stopped dead still in his tracks and started to breathe heavily. Finn noticed this and knelt down to Matthew's height. Matthew started to panic and the tears welled up in his eyes. Finn hugged him and carried him the rest of the way to the auditorium.
Mr Schue was already in the audience when the two brothers arrived, Finn carrying Matthew, his eyes red from crying. "Hello again, Matthew," Mr Schue said with a delighted smile. "I was glad to see your name on the auditions list. What will you be singing for me?" He asked with a smile in anticipation. "I'd Give My Life for You, from Miss Saigon" Matthew said quietly, his breathing still erratic. "Can't you stay Finny?" Matthew blurted out suddenly when he saw his brother going to leave. "Of course he can stay, if it would make you happy." Mr Schue said, grinning contentedly at the adorableness and Finn went to sit in the audience.
Matthew started to sing and it was angelic. Mr Schue grinned wider and wider as the song went on. Whenever Matthew felt the nerves coming back, all he needed to do was look over to Finn and he had all the courage he needed when he beamed back. When he had finished his song, both Mr Schue and Finn stood up and clapped vigorously. Matthew ran down off of the stage and into Finn's arms, giggling. "That was absolutely lovely buddy!" Mr Schue said ecstatically. Matthew could hardly contain his happiness when he convinced Finn to audition as well. When Finn went up onto stage, Matthew went up the rows until he reached Mr Schue and sat on his lap. Matthew loved hearing Finn singing, it brought joy to him that he couldn't describe.
Needless to say, they both impressed Mr Schue and were delighted when they were made members.
Matthew's favourite part of the day would be Glee Club. Seeing as it was a Monday, school finished after lunch, so when they had finished their audition, Finn took Matthew home. "Mummy's not home yet, can you play with me please Finny?" "Of course, I'd love to." Finn replied, grateful to spend more time with his brother. That evening, the two boys played dress up and karaoke and when it was time for bed, Finn read Matthew bedtime stories. Matthew wouldn't sleep unless Finn was there. Matthew fell asleep in Finns lap in his basement bedroom and Finn carried him into his own bed. Matthew stirred and asked "Where's mummy?" Matthew asked in a concerned voice. This made Finn anxious as he too was wondering the same thing. Just as he thought this, the doorbell rang and this made him hopeful. He picked Matthew up and went to the front door. When he opened it, standing there were two policemen who took their hats off. One of them said "We're very sorry to tell you this, but your mother had a heart attack and I'm afraid that she didn't make it. I'm so sorry for your loss." They went away and Finn closed the door behind them in devastation, Matthew still in his arms, his eyes wide with terror and watering before floods of tears began pouring out and leaked from them. Finn just hugged him closer and kissed his head and whispered over and over that "It's going to be fine." Eventually, they fell asleep in each other's arms.
The next day at school, Finn took Matthew to the choir room with him for their first Glee Club session. There were other teens in the room: Rachel Berry, Artie Abrams, Kurt Hummel, Tina Cohen-Chang and Mercedes Jones. They smiled at Matthew and Finn as they entered. Matthew attempted a weak smile in return. During this first meeting, Mr Schue told them about all of the different show choir competitions which we would be attending. Matthew just sat with a fixed expression in Finns arms holding close to him, his eyes sad and tired. The next day, the group would be attending Vocal Adrenaline's showcase at Carmel High.
The next day when getting on the bus to go to Carmel High, Matthew held onto Finn's hand for support as he ascended the tall steps to enter the bus. When at Carmel High, Finn realises he needed to buy him and Matthew lunch from the cafeteria. "What do you want sweetie?" Finn asked with a vague smile in his voice. "I don't mind, I'm not really hungry. Sorry Finny." replied Matthew in a plaintive voice. "Don't be silly, you don't have to apologise." Although, Finn had been worrying about Matthew, ever since losing their parents, Matthew hasn't been eating properly. Finn decided that he would talk to Mr Schue as he would know what to do. When he told his teacher, Mr Schue said "It's very normal for people to lose their appetite after a great shock as you two have had. But keep an eye on him, ok? Let me know if there's anything else you need, anything at all." "Thanks Mr Schue." Finn smiled as he was beginning to understand that he would have to be the guardian of Matthew and be his parental role model.
Taking their seats in the auditorium, the New Directions waited with bated breath as the members of Vocal Adrenaline walked onto stage in their formation. They began their routine and the hearts of the New Directions faltered as they performed their complex dance number. Disheartened, the Glee kids went back to school. Going into the auditorium, Finn remembered how he would sing Journey songs when his mum bought Emerald Dreams. He whispered the name of a song to the band and they started to play. The New Directions faces lifted as they began to sing "Don't Stop Believing" with Finn and Rachel on lead vocals. At this moment, Matthew knew happiness and almost forgot his troubles for a few minutes. Almost.
