Chapter Five

It was the week leading up to the show choir Invitationals. They would be held in the William McKinley auditorium and it would be the first showcase of the New Directions talent along with the other show choir competitors. Mr Schue was working with the Glee Clubbers more frequently and taking them off timetable for the last remaining days before the showcase. At the beginning of the week, Mr Schue entered the choir room with a grave look on his face. It turned out that the minimum amount of people required in a group for show choir competitions was twelve. As it stood, their number was an eight, after Brittany and Santana left when Quinn was thrown out: Finn, Matthew, Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes, Tina, Artie and Blaine. They still needed four more members to be eligible to compete in the competition. An idea sparked in Matthew's head as to who might join if pushed a little. At lunch that day, Matthew went with Finn into the cafeteria where they found Finn's fellow jocks including Matt, Sam, Mike and Puck. It seemed that Finn had the same idea as Matthew. Finn had seen a guitar stand in Puck's room and heard Sam sing. With Mike's agility and flexibility on the football field, he was sure to be a natural dancer. They weren't sure about Matt, but they knew that they could rope him in.
Matthew stared at his feet and fumbled with the zipper of his jacket as he and Finn approached the table, hand in hand. "Hey buddy, you ok?" Finn asked, still worried about his little brother after the incident with his ex-girlfriend, Quinn. "Yeah Finny, just a bit nervous for Invitationals." Matthew said. "Aww, don't be sweetheart. It'll be amazing." Finn replied, hugging Matthew. They walked up to the table and Matthew went and said hello to Finn's friends. "So guys, we need more people to join Glee Club so that we can perform at the show choir competitions. I'm sorry but I wouldn't ask if it wasn't absolutely important." Finn asked, getting straight to the point. To Matthew and Finn's relief, the footballers smiled and agreed to join.
After this, the group, now at twelve, had worked hard to get all of the numbers ready for Invitationals on Friday.
They were finally ready and it was the night of the performance. The Glee Clubbers were in the choir room, all in matching blue and black suits. Mr Schue was giving a pep talk to them. As this was their first showcase, they were all nervous. Matthew was shaking, Finn steadied him with a supportive squeeze of his hand. Finn picked Matthew up and bounced him gently on his hip to calm him, Mike smiled and rubbed Matthew's back soothingly. It was time. The bell had rung and the lights flashed off and on.
They filed onto the stage behind the curtain and found their places. The curtains were drawn back and the bright, harsh light burst onto them. The music danced into action and the Glee Clubbers danced to the beat of the music, just as Mr Schue had taught them. Matthew loves every second of it and breathed in the music. Matthew didn't realise that he was already singing as he became so immersed in the song. When the number was finished and the lights went off, they dashed off stage for the other acts to prepare. They could hardly contain their excitement. Finn picked up Matthew who was virtually squealing. They embraced for a long time and by this time, it was late in the evening.
It had started to rain when Finn decided that he would take a now sleeping Matthew home to bed. Mr Schue had lent him his umbrella to take back to the car with him. Matthew shivered into Finn's chest and rubbed his eyes. The vast surface area of the umbrella created a soothing pattering which swept Matthew of into sleep.

So, so sorry again that I haven't updated in ages. This was a shorter chapter and not one of my best. Hope you enjoyed it anyhow. Xxx
