Prologue

Finn Hudson, quarterback of the McKinley High football team, was walking home from football practice when his phone buzzed incessantly in his pocket. He groaned as he saw that it was his mother. He reluctantly picked up, knowing how she would berate him for not doing so. "Hi mum," he sighed. "What is it". Finn couldn't quite decipher what his mum was saying as she spoke through muffled sobs and cries. But one thing that he could deduce was that his father was killed during a car accident when driving home from work. Only one thing raced through his mind: How would he tell his younger brother that his daddy was dead.
After fumbling with his door keys for several seconds, he found the right one and struggled to get the key into the lock. It was time. No sooner than turning the key in the lock, a small boy who hardly reached Finn's knees bundled towards him and curled up into the taller boys strong, warm arms. Finn embraced him warmly, kissing him softly on the top of his head. "Hey buddy," Finn said calmly. "I need to talk to you. Umm, well, I'm afraid we can't see daddy anymore." "Why not Finny?" inquired his brother, Matthew, quietly as Finn lifted his slight weight easily in one hand. "Daddy died today."
Matthew's large brown eyes welled with tears and a large wet patch appeared on Finn's football jersey. He hugged his little brother closer and Matthew clung desperately to his brothers shirt not wanting to let go.
That night Matthew couldn't sleep. He went down to Finn's basement bedroom and knocked on the door. He knew that Finn probably wouldn't be sleeping yet. When Finn opened the door and found his younger brother with tears welling in his eyes, he bent down to Matthew's height and embraced him and carried him to his bed, knowing that he wouldn't be able to sleep without Finn by his side. They just lay in bed, Matthew's breathing slowing, bundled in Finn's arms. "It's going to be ok" Finn whispered into his soft brown hair as he too fell asleep, his hand around Matthew's smaller one. "I love you Finny." whispered Matthew. "I love you too honey. So, so much." Finn replied kissing him, his heart filling with joy. He knew he would love Matthew and keep him safe forever.
