CLARY HAD JUST driven the gang back to the institute and they were walking back inside towards the Ops centre. Both Alec and Shay were annoyed at Clary's never ending questions.

"I still don't understand."
"Doesn't take a lot to confused you, does it gingersnap?"

Alec let out a small chuckle and shook his head at the strawberry blonde next to him, while Izzy turned to face her with a smile on her face.

"How can shadowhunters be better than what you people call mundanes?"
"Because we protect humans."

Shay sat down on the bench, next to where they had all stopped. Her feet were hurting and her laces had come undone. She bent down to tie them back up when she saw a pair of hands grab hers and take over. Alec's hands.

"I got it don't worry."

"What did I do to deserve someone like you?"

"Must have had a good previous life."

The strawberry blonde laughed and smiled at the raven haired boy while he tied her laces for her. She couldn't help the feeling she got whenever she was around him recently and she didn't want the feeling to stop.

"You left Simon all alone in the van. Great job guys, you rock."

Alec stood up from Shay's shoes and turned to face Clary. He had royally had enough of the ginger girl in front of him, who was constantly passing the blame on to other people. While Alec was facing Clary, Shay stood up and wrapped her arms around her parabatai who seemed annoyed but distraught that she had lost the mundane.

"There is some truth to the idea that human beings should have a modicum of common sense."
"Izzy did everything in her power, gingersnap, to keep Simon safe. She can't help it if he runs towards danger."

"Alec, Shay, not now."
"Why not Izzy, it really isn't your fault that Simon's in danger."

Izzy glared at her parabatai, silently telling her to be quiet, to not make matters worse. Shay understood and stopped with the comments, grabbing Alec's hand and lacing their fingers together. The raven haired boy looked down at her and smiled, squeezing her hand before looking at Jace.

"Look, they won't do anything to Simon. They just wanted to draw you out. They want the cup, and they think you have it."

"But why do they think that? Why does anyone think that?"

Shay scoffed at Clary's stupidity.

"Because your Valentine's daughter honey and your mum was his wife. Do I really need to join the dots for you?"

Clary glared at her frenemy. She was already stressed enough at the fact that her best friend was missing and she didn't like the blunt sarcastic comments she was receiving.

"What, my mum lies to me my entire life, except oh by the way, there's this magic cup, I hid on like, the plant Bongo, but don't tell anyone. What am I supposed to do now?"
