Josie had just finished prying the bent metal cover off when Alex burst through the doors."Alex?! What are you doing?" Josie asked as she saw him run towards the tall metal tower in the middle of the roof.
"The satellite is bent, I'm gonna fix it" He glared at the tower, a glint of fear in his eyes.
"You can do this, Alex" Josie gave, what she hoped was, a supportive grin, "Just remember, don't look down"
Josie watched as Alex hoisted himself onto the first beam. She gave a slight wince before turning back to the task at hand. Josie was not the most knowledgable when it came to machinery other than cars, but as she glanced at the slightly crushed generator in front of her she couldn't help but smile. Back home, they had their fair shares of blackouts and this piece of equipment in front of her was barely different than the emergency generator back home. The girl immediately reached her hands into the device and pulled out two wires that had been torn when the large piece of debris had fallen on it. Sliding her multi-tool from her back pocket, she whipped out the small knife portion and quickly stripped the two wires. She tapped them together, once, twice, three times before the generator beeped and the lights on top began to flicker. Josie grinned, reaching into her backpack and pulling out some ducktape she had taken from the mall. Taping the wire together, she began to pull her hands out. Josie slid the walkie talkie from her pocket and gave a confirmation to Zhenzhen. Moments later, the lights on the roof flickered on and Josie couldn't help the victorious laugh that left her mouth.
Suddenly a nearly imperceptible growl broke through the air. Josie looked up slowly and was met with the sight of the raging alien climbing it's way onto the roof. The small girl gave a squeak in terror and quickly ducked behind the large generator, glancing up briefly to watch as Alex continued to scale the metal tower, almost reaching the white satellite.
"Alex! Josie! Behind you!"
The creature roared and immediately began scaling the tower after Alex, who had only just reached the satellite and was attempting to kick it into place.
Josie's breath was coming out rapidly. The hyperventilation causing her chest to ache and vision to blur. She held her stomach as glanced once more and saw the alien rapidly approaching a struggling Alex.
"You can do this. You have to do this." Josie muttered to herself under her breath before giving off a shuddering laugh, "Who am I kidding? I can barely stand up to Dariush"
For once in your life, don't be such a wimp.
"Hey! Ugly! Why don't you pick on someone else!"
Josie choked on her saliva as she realized that those words had come from HER mouth. She gave a half laugh half gasp as she waved her arms around frantically to draw the attention of the monster.
The clawed alien turned to the sound of the taunts and stopped its climb as it looked at her.
"Yeah! You heard me! You big, ugly alien! I'm talking to you! Pareces una chupacabra!" Josie screamed breathlessly, then with finality the beast slowly began to descend just as Alex finally kicked the satellite into position, the light on its side flickering to green.
"Josie! Run!" Alex shouted down to his friend both to warn her and to draw the aliens attention back to him.
Josie had been so preoccupied with the accomplishments of the red-haired boy that she didn't even realize that the alien had nearly reached the bottom and would've been on her in seconds. Josie hightailed it. Sprinting towards the doorway that leads to the stairs. Josie took a last glance up at Alex and let her jaw drop as she saw the boy zipline the wiring and land with a triumphant huff on the ground. Fear and adrenaline pushed her to run even faster as she left the roof.
She burst through the doors to the main computer lab panting. Gabriel's head turned to the sound of the noise and ran straight towards the girl.
Before Josie could even speak, she was enveloped in a warm hug. The adrenaline quickly melted away and all that remained was the residual fear that gave her more than enough motivation to hug the boy back just as tightly.
"You had me worried there for a second" Gabriel whispered, giving her a final squeeze before turning and dragging her quickly back towards the computers but not before asking, "Come on, I needed another set of hands. We gotta do this"
"What do we do?" Josie felt the rush as Gabriel rapidly placed a card into her hand and pointed at a slot and button.
"Right here, okay?" Josie was so panicked by the experience that she barely noticed Zhenzhen come up beside her and gently take the card from her hand.
"I got this, get Dariush"
Josie could only nod gratefully, handing it over to Zhenzhen and turning to the unconscious boy. She placed a hand on his cheek and noticed the feverish state. His wound didn't seem infected but it had begun to bleed quite badly. She quickly found the backpack that she had left in the room and pulled out the tank top she had previously been wearing and pressed it tightly against the wound. She turned her head and saw Gabriel and Zhenzhen counting down.
"Three! Two! On-"
The simultaneous crash of ceiling tiles and roar of a beast, along with proceeding screams were enough to tip Josie off.
The alien had found them.
