Apparently, Liam was the captain of the basketball team and Connor was usually on the bench during games. He had huge hopes though. Going out made me feel better. It was a bit windy and my hair kept flying around. I watched Liam and Connor run around the court from the bleachers. I took a look at the girls at the side shouting and jumping around, throwing each other around and sort of dancing, cheerleaders. Liam always went to kiss one of them on her cheek when he scored a shot and I don't mean the same girl. I was disgusted. Liam and Connor were best friends and had been for a while I think.
On the ride to school, I was pretty much invisible. Connor didn't talk to me at all. He and Liam were rapping along to a noisy rapper. Of course, I had no idea who it was. I still remember some songs but they were very different from what I was listening to in Liam's car, more calm. When we got to school for basketball practice, Connor took me to a group of girls who seemed really excited.
"You've been watching Liam for a while now," one of the girls said, nudging me.
I didn't remember her name.
Not my fault. It was probably long and Spanish judging by her look.
"He's disgusting," I said.
"He was my boyfriend," she said, staring at the court.
"Were you blind?" I asked her. Then covered my mouth with my two hands, surprised that I said that. She laughed.
"Nope. He is really good looking if you look well," she said.
"I know that." With his jet black hair and beautiful blue eyes he is easily one of the hottest guys in school. I can't say that he's the hottest because I've not seen everyone due to the fact that I've not spent up to one week in this school. "I mean his attitude. He's so... bad. And why is he constantly wearing a leather jacket?"
"Girls like bad boys," the girl said, giving me a look that clearly meant I was outdated.
"I gotta go," I said and stood up and walked away from the bleachers.
I walked towards the parking lot to wait for Connor by his car. The game was interesting but I needed some alone time. I know that I should be tired of myself by now.
I'm not sure if I even want to know what is happening to me. It's all too scary and weird. I might be like what, 50 years old in reality. I must have had parents who loved me and would have been worried about me.
I had Alfie.
I don't remember anything about us. It would be really awkward if he turns out to be my brother.
Really, really awkward, because I seem to be in love with his eyes.
"Jesus, Mara!" someone said.
"What?" I asked.
"You look terrible," he said. I looked up at Liam since I'm really short and then down at my grey jeans and grey long sleeved top and tried to imagine how my brown, wavy hair looked, after the wind had been blowing it around.
"How about you tell me something I don't know," I said and realized that my voice came out as a whimper instead of the sarcastic tone I was going for.
"No. not that," he shook his head. "You've been crying, I need to call Connor. It's about this "
I didn't realize I had been crying. "No! Um that's not necessary" I said quickly wiping my eyes with the sleeves of my top. I did not want Connor to see me in such a horrible state and start worrying about me.
"That's what Gabrielle said before committing suicide last year," he mumbled. Then he brought out his phone a punched in some numbers which I assumed were Connor's.
"Where the hell are you? Your girlfriend is crying her eyes out over here," Liam said.
Girlfriend?
I didn't know that Connor had a girlfriend.
"Claire? Who the hell is Claire? I'm talking about Mara." Liam continued into his phone.
Oh.
"Whatever... What the hell do you mean you're getting on a plane to Florida?" Liam paced back and forth.
I just kept staring at the ground. I mean, there was really nothing in Liam just leaving me. I could walk to my apartment alone.
"Are you alright?" Liam said.
"Honestly..." I started.
"Shh," Liam said and I looked up. He wasn't talking to me but he was still on the phone with Connor. "He'll be alright okay?"
When Liam got off the phone, he looked at me for a few seconds and sighed.
"Get in," he said, opening the passenger door. I stared at him. No way I'm getting into a car with Liam without Connor.
"I'll walk home," I said.
"I SAID GET IN!" he shouted at me.
I obeyed. He was scary, and a gentleman for opening the door for me.
He fumbled for the keys in his pocket and got in. He cussed under his breath and hit the steering wheel, making me jump with the sound of the horn.
He shook his head. "I'm sorry for shouting," he said, facing me. "Connor's dad had a heart attack and so, he left during practice to go see him with his mom."
"Is he alright?"
"I hope," he mumbled and drove off. He put on the radio and I had to endure the noise blaring from the speakers. It was his car.

He dropped me off in front of my apartment building and drove off at once. I saw a package in front of the door with a note attached to it.
Hey Mara,
I got this for you because, people really need these nowadays.
I came to drop this off before rushing to the airport.
Don't even think about returning this iPhone
- Connor.
