Several months after Sasori and Maeme's arrival at the Akatsuki, Maeme had managed to gain two enemies and a sort of acquaintance. Sasori kept to himself, locked away in their shared quarters working on poisons and puppets, leaving Maeme with unusual amounts of free time. When she isn't with Sasori, she trains with Itachi who seemed to not loathe her presence, unlike his partner who can't stand her for being able to match his strength. Their rivalry led to various fights throughout the base, leaving mud and destroyed furniture in their wake. Orochimaru had taken a strange interest in the blonde, but she and Sasori both did their best to keep him at arm's length.

Maeme takes a deep breath of the fresh air as she moves across the tree limbs above Orochimaru and Sasori, on their way to carry out an assassination for Kirigakure. Despite being able to enjoy the freedom of being away from the base, Maeme hates the missions. Sasori always has her to stay back and secure the area, the only fighting being her coming to Sasori's defense if someone tries to attack him. They reach the edge of the tree line so she jumps down to stand beside Sasori. He glances down at her before focusing on the docks ahead.

The boat carrying the trio stops at a dock shrouded in heavy mist and Maeme slips some money to the man before they head off into the mist. They walk in silence in search of a hidden place to rest for the night and go over their plan. Orochimaru picks a spot and Maeme starts a small fire before sitting in front of it. She sets a small cup of water to boil for her instant ramen and stares at it intently.

"So, in the morning I assume I'm to wait here while you take care of the target?"

"You make it sound like a bad thing." Sasori says from his spot beside her.

"It tends to get rather boring sitting around doing nothing. It makes me proud to have left my usefulness as a ninja to come sit around and get fat."

"I tried to make you stay behind." He chides.

"I couldn't very well let you go running around the world by yourself, now could I?" Maeme retorts as she offers a bite of ramen to him.

He declines it while staring at her with an unreadable look. Orochimaru chuckles as he watches their exchange, drawing her attention.

"What are you laughing at, Snake Man?"

"Nothing Child." He grins broadly as she tenses in response.

"Can I kill him? Just a little?" Maeme whines to Sasori.

"No, he's somewhat useful."

The following morning, they wake up just before dawn and Maeme watches as the Akatsuki members head off into the mist. She stretches as she gets to her feet and begins to pack away the remains of their camp. A few boredom filled minutes pass after checking the area before Maeme climbs up onto a tree branch to get some reading done. There wasn't much else for her to do until their return. About ten pages in, Maeme casually closes the small leather bound tome and holds it in front of her left eye as a senbon sinks into the cover. Her eyes focus on the needle, a scowl darkening her features.

"I quite liked this book."

(A/N: I had to break this chapter as it got pretty long, sorry!)
