"Ruth dear," he called, "I think it's time we tell her."

8 May, was supposed to be a fantastic and spectacular day for Alice Jonah(pronounced as Yo-na).

As she turned 17, she could finally almost-rule by her father's side. The age to rule officially was 18, but the age for the heir to accompany the ruler was 17.

It was a beautiful morning with the sun not too bright nor too dull. As she slept she dreamt of the kingdom flourish under her rule, they would call her queen, she would rule with justice and mercy in all her power. It would be truly amazing.

Her father, King Charles Jonah, sat next to his daughter's body sound asleep. His face filled with pity and regret to what he would have to do: crush her dreams.
Oh how he loved her.
But duty before self.

"Happy birthday Alice... Happy birthday Alice...Happy birthday...Happy birthday...Happy birthday Alice" he sang softly but loud enough for her to shuffle in her sheets and wake up.
"Father!" She exclaimed and flew her arms around her father.

Her hair was still a mess, her dress was loose and it almost looked like she had wrapped a blanket around her. Her eyes, a mixture of green and brown as she drew back, her skin the same shade of olive as her mother's. She looked so much like her.

"Happy birthday dear" he wished with a gentle, warm smile. "Thank you Father." She was so happy.

"Where's mother?" She asked. "She is preparing a surprise..." "Today is your day, get ready and we shall spend the day doing the one thing you love most- dressing up as commoners and roaming the town."

The day was as planned.
Alice dressed up as a commoner almost as if she were one, she pretended to be one of them. They watched dramas, participated in fairs, rode across the town she loved.

As a child she had a tendency to run into the town. Charles would always have to send the guards to get her. He restricted her to go to the town and accept her life as a royal. She would sometimes cry about how her life was like a bird being caged or how she had such hard lessons to practise almost everyday.

When she turned 16 she had paperwork growing with her day by day. She never found time to go to the town. She never properly knew her kingdom after she was 10. Her mother insisted her to learn the proper methods and ways of being a princess.

So, today, to her was fantastic and spectacular.

It was at night, that they reached back to the castle. Her mother, had a stern look on her face. But she held a present in her hands, a small box.

"Oh my darling, you must be tired! Come have a seat." She called her.
Darling? Alice thought, how darling? It's usually just 'you child' or 'little princess'. But because it's today is why it's special.

"Go change now, get into some comfortable clothing. We have to talk about something serious." And the stern look was back.

Alice changed from a milkmaid's clothes to her night gown. She combed her hair and wore her slippers. She wrapped her upper body with a shawl, because no matter how well she knew the people of the castle, she was a princess and duty before leisure.

She went to her mother's room where her father was also seated.
"Allison Cecile Jonah", Ruth(mother) spoke with a sharp voice," there are two things that were to be revealed to you today."
"Both shall upset you dear..." Her father began but was cut off by Ruth. "Charles! You said you couldn't do it, so I will have to. You told me to bear another burden! Now I shall tell her."

"But why today? Why are you telling me something that will upset me on my birthday?"

"Because, little princess, you have lived a lie for too long and it's better if truth is revealed."

Alice sat and braced herself for the dreadful news she was about to recieve, but nothing could brace her for the two things that not only upset her, but crushed a reality that she had built for 17years.
