What is a Spoonie, even? Well... I didn't know there was such either a thing until very recently. And apparently, have been one for a long time. It's not some woke-ish personality designation of the moment, it really is a thing. Of all the fat squares in the quilt of my life - this is new but not entirely unwelcome. How I stumbled upon this startling revelation is quite simple —After a massive and seriously intense wake up call regarding my health, I discovered a few things that needed tending to.
Still processing through a lot, to be quite honest. Learning things about one's self can occasionally be jarring, but quite informative; but only if we're open to taking a hard look. Unfortunately, the last few weeks and months have felt a lot like trying to smooth out crumpled paper. The texture of smoothed out paper after it's been balled up definitely has a beauty all its own, but it's not the same as before and never will be again.
I mean, yo... life isn't exactly perfect, right? Goodness knows mine isn't.Not gonna preach or whinge or anything of the sort. For those that are struggling, and those who wish to understand — I hope that in reading this, you'll have a moment of clarity about something that perhaps you've misunderstood about yourself or someone you know.
Tell ya what - there's lots of Spoonies out there. Tell you something else too... we're hiding in plain sight.
Some of us aren't quite aware yet that there's a name for what they're going through and those that are probably aren't going to reveal themselves any time soon.
Stigma about so-called "hidden" illnesses keeps lots of people in a holding pattern where they appear to be hanging on (if only barely) and makes them reluctant to speak out about their experiences. I'm certainly not gonna tell tales out of school.
Lots of people don't understand medical illnesses unless they can see the effects of it, or already accept its existence. If you need visible signs to confirm your personal understanding of somebody else's condition, you're not necessarily a bad person. "You don't look sick" is a common refrain. Again, if you've said that to someone, you're not a bad person, but we can all stand to level up a bit in empathy, yes?
Everybody knows somebody who has chronic pain, or is chronically ill. (Yes ✨EVERYBODY✨)
