Zaira's POV
"Alex, give me the peripherally inserted central catheter so we can insert it into this poor baby and open up the lungs and give him better oxygen," I said to Alex as I titled the babies head back gently and waited for Alex to gently insert PICC into the baby's trachea as the poor boy already had a nose tube to help with the food, so that wasn't an option.
"I'm sorry I was working on another patient
but I will insert it as Ameena's calling you," he said as he pointed to the cubicle next to ours.I nodded my head and walked towards Meme. This was the last hour of our shift and we have seen some really messed up cases of infants going through child abuse. It was my first ever case and I had suspected the father and mother to be abusing the poor two-year-old boy and I was right as there were cuts and bruises in abnormal places and in weird fist-sized shapes.
So I had reported it to Amena who had reported it to Mr Wane and we made up a reason why we needed to see the child alone. They also had a 6-year-old daughter with a nasty gash to the back of her forehead and when I asked her what had happened, she said she fell down the stairs.
I had spoken to the girl alone in the playroom where I had taken her little brother and she finally told the truth. We called security to take the parents of the hospital premises and phone the hospital social worker who came and spoke to the children before taking them away.
Right now I made my way towards Ameena and saw her doing a check up on a 12-year-old girl who looked scared and terrified.
"Hey, Meme wassup?" I asked as I tried to seem calm and happy to help the little girl calm down.
"Nothing, I'm just going to brief you on this girl Sophie's case and then you can help me with making sure she is okay. Sophie this is Dr Zaira Hussain and Zaira this is Sophie", she said to me as the teenage girl was shaking with fear.
"No, you can't tell her about it please", Sophie pleaded as she grabbed onto Ameena's arms.
What happened to this girl? Please don't tell me it was abuse or even worse rape as that is horrible. Why do people like that exist?
"Hey, it's okay I will help you okay and make sure nothing happens to you. what are you so afraid of?" I asked her gently as I sat next to her and placed her hand in mind and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
I don't care of that seems weird to other's but she is a child and to me, that is a sign of affection that everyone in the Asain and Pakistani community does.
"I don't know what your favourite chocolate is but I have a bar of Galaxy, if you want it, it is yours?" I offered her as she nodded her head and smiled at me showing me her dimples as I showed her mine.
She swept her shoulder length jet black hair away from her bright blue eyes and reached out a shaking hand and took the chocolate bar from my hand.
"Thank yo..you" she stuttered as she took out a small bite before offering Ameena and I a small piece to which we both accepted and placed it in our mouths as we all giggled.
"Okay, I will just have a small chat with Dr Zaira Hussain and we will be right back", Ameena said as we left the cubicle and wrapped the dividers around the railing separating it from the other cubicles in the large room.
"So, Sophie was found unconscious in an alley", Ameena told me confirming my thoughts.
"No, don't tell me it was rape?" I asked her as she nodded her head at me.
"Yep, it was. Luckily the poor woman who phoned the ambulance had already phoned the police beforehand and taken a picture of the rapist and he has been arrested", Ameena said as she was filling out the checkup sheet.
