Below us the neighborhood changed to the city from there to a smaller neighborhood with enormous houses. We soar over the numerous amount of housing and come to the end of the neighborhood. I gape at the mansion we land in front of. An old Victorian house painted a grey and white. “My God.”
“Close but still a little off.” Starr chuckles.
I look over my shoulder. “Is this where you live?” He nods.
Something pulls my hair. I yelp and turn on my heels. No one was there. I glance at Starr. He just shrugs but the slightly amussed look told me i was missing something important. Something pinches me. I jump. “What's doing that?”
A small winged creature flies into my face. “Most normal people say hi."
I squeal as I jump back. “It’s a faerie!”
The little female glares at me as she plants her hands on her hips and stomps the air. “Excuse me sir but I am not a faerie. Faeries are nice little brats. I am a pixie.”
I lift an eyebrow, slowly getting used to the small person. “What’s the difference?”
She looks at Starr. “They put it in this?”
Starr shrugs.
She rolls her eyes. “Okay well pixies are somewhat like faeries but we are very different in personality. Pixies are very mischievous.” Her smile goes from pointed ear to pointed ear. She was very pretty now that I took a closer look. Her light brown hair was in a pixie cut style. I guess I should’ve expected that. Her clothing was a small little pink dress but not made of petals like I thought. It was obviously an actual human made dress. “Am I too small cause you’re squinting?”
I gulp. “No. I just-”
She puts her tiny hand out. “Save it.” In a flash of light she appears in front of me the size of a small teen, maybe a year younger than I. “Is this more to your liking?”
I stare at her. What was happening? When did any of this exist and when did I get sucked into it? More importantly why was I in it? Why was I being protected? I take a look at her eyes. Like if they had a life of their own the colors blue, purple, light green, and pink mix together in swirls of color. Her clear little wings had vanished. I make eye contact with Starr. “Any other creatures I should know about?”
He beams. “That’s only the beginning my friend.” He gestures me to follow him with his head as he walks up the path to the door. As we move closer a teen walks out onto the porch inclines his head at me. I assume that’s his way of saying hi.
He was small for a teen but looked very graceful and fragile. His bright leaf green eyes were big and he possessed the features of a female. His chin and ears were pointed, check bones high, body thin, and his pale skin had a light tint of green. His short red hair was ruffled and messy I wasn’t about to ask if it was natural or just because of their problem. His feet were bare and small. His white shirt was wrinkled and half of it was tucked into his tan colored shorts.
Starr speaks up. “By the way. The annoying pixie-”
“Hey!”
He rolls his eyes. “She’s Falyn. Rance here is a Dryad.”
I giggle a little.
Rance narrows his eyes at me.
“I’m so sorry. I just thought Dryad’s were all supposed to be female.”
Rance sways on his heels. “Yeah they are. I’m the only exception I guess.”
“First and only male.” Falyn sings as she passes him skipping into the house. “We have a guest!”
“I’m going to pluck her wings off.” Rance whispers.
“Don’t we all wish we could?” Starr pats him on the shoulder and beckons me. I follow him into the beautifully huge house. My breath taken with every sight my eyes see.
“Who’s the newbie?!” A voice rich with excitement calls out. I meet the eyes of two females descending the stairs. The one who had spoken had her arms in the air. If I didn’t know better I’d think I was completely straight. She was a goddess in black skinny jeans, a Sleeping with Sirens t-shirt, and Toms. Her black waist length hair floated behind her and her dark blue with purple hued eyes sparkled. “He’s just adorable!”
Rance steps into the house. “He’s the one Rebel.”
She and the other beauty pause at the bottom of the stairs. Her friend seemed calm nonetheless as if she knew this would be happening at some point. She was a tanned princess with fiery curly red hair and piercing green eyes. Her attire was a small black skirt with a sleeveless red shirt and black Toms. She notices me and smiles. “I’m Sphinx.”
I wave.
Rebel jumps off the last two steps and lands near me. She squeaks and hugs me. “You are just adorable!” I feel my cheeks burn. She releases me and turns to the boys a serious look on her perfect face. “Kort and Lex? How are they doing?”
“Last time I saw them they were keeping Trent from taking off after our Key.”
“Key?” They all stare at me. “I’m not a key.”
“No one’s explained it yet?” Sphinx utters. They others shake their heads in response. She huffs. “Leave it all to the women.”
Rance chuckles softly as he folds his arms. "You aren't even eighteen yet.”
Sphinx huffs. "I will be in less than a month."
"Big whoop."
Falyn sways a bit and sighs in boredom. “I’m going to steal some cookies.” She changes to her small self and flies over our heads to the kitchen. “Bye!”
“Doesn’t take a thing seriously.” Rebel growls. “Pixies.”
“Did you say Trent earlier Starr?” Sphinx questions ignoing Rance's silly faces as he makes fun of her. I smile a little at him. I guess these beings weren't any different from me.
Starr nods.
She covers her mouth. “That demon’s been sent by the Devil himself to kill the Key. Starr he’s the one we’ve been looking for!”
“Wait!” I shout. “What does my boyfriend have anything to do with this?”
Rebel blinks. “You’re gay?” She crosses her arms. “Another one for me to deal with. Perfect.” Another? How many guys am I going to have to look out for?
“That doesn’t matter.” Rance whispers.
"Yes it does." She whines. "I only have Lex to play with and you know Kort is too old for my tricks."
"Surprise, surprise. Of course you'd go after the dark brute." Rance sticks his tongue out at her. She returns it with a middle finger.
"I'll have you know Lex is a very kind brute to me."
They ramble about it in the background while Sphinx speaks. “I’m sorry to tell you this but Trent was just playing you. He used you to get the Key.”
“Key to what?” I say. “I don’t have one.”
Starr sighs. “You do. It’s inside you.”
