“You didn’t have to go to all this trouble.” Starr whispers as I place another pancake on the stack. Nav and Rance dive for the warm pancake. We laugh as Rance plops it onto his plate and drowns it in syrup. Nav pouts.

“There’s more coming Nav.” I turn back to the stove.

Rance swallows a huge bite. “Man it’s been ages since we’ve eaten like this.” He stuffs more into his mouth and smiles.

I glance at them. “What do you guys eat every morning?”

“Anything we find in the fridge.” Starr says as he points at the huge gray fridge a couple feet away.

I flip two pancakes. “Well consider yourselves lucky cause He put the Key in a cook.” They laugh at my joke.

“Starr’s right though.” Nav begins as the laughing dies down. He decides to settle for a cold pancake. “You don’t have to do this.”

I place the last five on the tall stack. “It’s the least I can do. You’re all here protecting me.”

Rebel stomps into the kitchen with Kort and Sphinx behind her. Kort was giving the runaway a piece of his worried mind. When their eyes catch the tall stack they pause. The three guys eating chuckle at the confused looks of their friends faces.

I motion to the food. “Eat up. There’s enough here to feed an army.”

“Did you make this?” Rebel whispers as she sits.

I nod before turning to the cupboards and grabbing three plates. “There’s plain and chocolate chip. Trust me the chocolate melted perfectly so I suggest you try those.” I shrug as I set the plates down in front of them. “But I’m not saying the plain ones are bad because they really aren’t. If I do say so myself.”

They were cautious at first but after they tried them they were all over the stack. Soon enough the huge pile was down to like five. “These are amazing.” Rebel mumbles.

“Thanks.” I say as I clean the mess I made. I place the plates from the ones who’d finished into the sick and turn the water on. “If you guys don’t mind I could start making lunch and dinner every day too.”

“It wouldn’t be too much trouble would it?” Kort asks.

I shake my head and smile at him. “It’s alright. I’d love to help out and I love cooking. On top of that it’ll take out the trouble of any of you getting the groceries.” It’ll hopefully get my mind off Trent as well. I needed to forget that night or it would tear me apart.

The pain unknowingly slows me down. If he wanted me dead then I had to forget he existed in my heart. How in the world would I do that? How could I? He had it completely. Without realizing it I stop washing the pan and stare out the window. The backyard was a magnificent garden. A white gazebo was hidden on a small hill surrounded by trees and other various plants and flowers. It didn’t seem to brighten my mood. Trent had a gazebo at his house if it was even his house to begin with.

Someone places their hand on my shoulder. I jump a little. “How are you doing?”

I glance at Starr before continuing the dishes. “Fine I just started daydreaming.” I try to ignore his touch.

“Do you want to talk about last night?”

I pull away as I turn the water off. “I’d rather not.” I turn away from everyone as I dry my hands. “Kort is Lex upstairs?”

He nods. He was concerned for me. His eyes had that shine. So did everyone else’s. I ignore the stares and pretend they weren’t worrying. “He’s locked in his room. Why?”

“I was going to bring him some pancakes.” I swing my arms for a bit before placing them behind my back. “He has to be hungry.”

It was silent. All except Kort, Rance, Nav and Starr were eating. I had a feeling they could sense my pain and that they wanted to help. They all knew my heart had been torn in the span of a few seconds. They probably knew I was doing this just to get away from all the worried eyes. Their worrying just kept reminding me. It just made it hurt more.

Kort sets his fork down as he breaths out. “I don’t see why not. Just don’t feel bad if he says anything rude.”

I nod and get a plate ready. They watched me as I did. I must’ve looked awful because every time I so much as took in a really deep breath they’d lock eyes with me. Mentally asking if I was okay and I mentally told them I was fine. I guess they were expecting the same thing. They and I were waiting for me to break down at any moment.

But when I finally walked out and away from their eyes I didn’t want to. Or maybe I just couldn’t. I tried. I even told myself they weren’t watching but even then I couldn’t get myself to show the pain. I knew I was hurting and so did they. I guess that was enough for me to handle right now after realizing that supernatural creatures existed. My mental capacity couldn’t handle all the new information and stress at the same time. So it did the smart thing. It took the information first and left the stress to linger till later.

It’s not like it changed anything. They and I still knew why I was like this. I’d lost someone I thought cared about me. Someone I thought would go to the ends of the earth to protect me. Then it turned out to be a trick. He only loved me for the Key and somehow I had to get over him.

But it hurt too much to do so.
