“Stop!” I shriek. “Please stop!” My sockets were screaming for mercy and tears streak down my face. “Stop!” They laughs hysterically as if they were playing a harmless game.

  “Pull harder!”

  “Listen to those screams!”

  “He’s crying!”

Their laughter fills my ears. They pull and yank but they didn’t want me dead. No not yet. They were enjoying my screams and pleas. They were enjoying my pain. They were feeding off it.

“Leave him alone!” Starr’s desperate scream echoes from the kitchen. They were waking up. “Trent stop it!”

  “Help me!”

“I’ll kill you!” Rebel shouts. “You hear me Trent?! I’ll tear that big ass head of yours off!”

“Please help!” I try struggling but the pain was too much.

“Hey!” A small tinkling voice shouts. “You ugly Demons better put him down!” Falyn suddenly appears in front of the demon holding my right leg. Compared to the thug she was tiny. “Stop it!” She kicks him where it counts. He howls in pain and releases my leg which falls painfully to the floor.

She shrinks as two others try to catch her. They slam into each other and trip over their friend as she takes off into the air high above their heads. She sticks her tongue out at them and waves her hands around near her head. “Castle hurry fight back!”

I stare up at her. “Are you crazy?!” I wasn’t a match for these demons even if one of my legs was free.

“Pull him apart! Now!” Trent barks. “The stupid pixie’s freeing the others! Let’s go!” The three demons follow orders. Through the wave of pain and sheet of tears I lift my numb leg and kick the demon. He cusses as he releases my leg. I land awkwardly on my feet. The pain hit hard in my hips. The nausea and dizziness stopped me from moving. I couldn’t do this anymore.

Something pushes the demons and yanks my arms with them. Taken off guard I fall to the ground. The shock vibrates through my already hurting body. I groan. I could hear the battle taking place around me but my body hurt too much to look in any given direction. I was just happy to know the basics. Falyn freed them and now they were kicking demon butt. That information was good enough for me at the moment.

Trent hovers over me and pulls me off the floor by my neck. “Stay away from my demons or I crack his neck!” He held me up for everyone to see as he faced me towards them. With my numb arms I lift them to grip his hand. Why struggle? I was already at his mercy. “What’s it going to be goody goodies?”

Starr throws one to the side. “Put the Key down Trent. Now.”

Trent snorts. “You gonna make me?!” He tightens his grip. I gag and whine. It’s a major sign when your boyfriend is willing to choke you twice without mercy. But I’m too much of a gullible trusting human to realize that.

“Do it for me Trent.” Rebel pouts as she somehow makes herself look innocent and fragile.

  “Shut up slut.”

“Well then.” She crosses her arms. “Asshole.”

Rance stares between Trent and I. “Can’t we just come to some agreement? A trade or…or something?”

Trent actually pretends to think about it. “Nothing I want from you freaks.”

Falyn lands on Rance’s shoulder and hugs his neck. Everyone was as helpless as me at this point. I could see they were trying to come up with something but every option led to the same thing. My neck cracked and the Key in their hands. But something happens. With a brave shine in his eyes Rance takes Falyn in his hand and gives her to Starr. Starr looked a bit confused. So did Falyn.

Rance steps forward. “You might want to rethink your strategy.”

“And why would I want to do that?” Trent hisses.

Rance shrugs nonchalantly. “Well I’m a Dryad.” He smiles. “And you’re near three plants.”

Trent snorts. “Whose leg are you trying to pull?!” He was laughing his ass off. “None of you have any special abilities! You are all weaklings!” The look on Rance’s face said Trent was right but he quickly hid it with the anger he was feeling.

“Put Castle down.” Suddenly millions of thin vines explode from different directions and curl around him. Putting up a good fight he tries to keep his grip on me but the vines tangle around his arm as more pull me away.

The vines gently set me down and Rance collapses. By now I couldn’t feel my limbs and whatever pain I was feeling was pulling me further and further out of consciousness. I probably didn’t look too hot either. I moan and slowly glance at Rance who’d fallen a few feet away from me. He was staring at me with worry and anger. “Kick Trent’s ass!” But everyone was too focused on me and Trent’s goons had already freed him and started retreating.

“How’d you do that?” Sphinx whispers as she pulls Rance slowly off the floor. He just shrugs.

Kort falls to his knees next to me. “Castle stay with us.” I didn’t realize how much my throat was damaged until the burning sensation came as I breathed in.

“Are any limbs dislocated or broken?” Starr asks as the rest start circling around me.

Rebel squeaks. “Oh Lex!” Her footsteps are heard running up the stairs. Falyn sits on my head and gently rubs my forehead as she whispers calming words in her tiny voice.

Kort stares at everyone. “Impossible. I knew the Key was powerful but nothing is dislocated or broken. The most that’s wrong is some torn ligaments but other than that he’s fine.”

“It protects itself by protecting him.” Starr utters. “That’s how it works.” So really the Key could care less about me. It just heals me to stay out of the Devil’s hands. Okay lesson learned.

“We need to get him upstairs.” Falyn whispers still comforting me. “I can make something for the pain and to speed up the healing.” She pauses. “But he’ll be asleep for a while.”

Kort sighs. “It’s probably for the best though.” He pulls me into his arms. I whine as the movement awakens the pain. Falyn shushes me as she continues her calm comforting whispering. Kort looks at the others. “Clean some of this up. Falyn and I will take care of Castle.”
