"It was a girl! I swear, why would I lie about this?" Crooned Newt as he ignored the ridicule of the other Glade members, his brows furrowed as his dark eyes glanced around, desperation falling off of each syllable, needing to be believed. The community merely laughed, some shoving the lean male in the back whilst they whispered amongst themselves.

He had seen her.

He had caught a glimpse of her through the closing gap of the maze, she had been so close, her hair as wild as her eyes. She had been running at such a pace that despite the impossible gap, even he had believed that she may have made it- if only she hadn't fell. Her scream still rang clear in his thoughts, ricocheting off of the walls of his mind until it made his ears ring painfully.

His heart was still beating erratically, his stomach continuing to do sick inducing spins that caused an uneasy feeling in his abdomen.

Dark eyes glanced in the direction of the Glade leader in whom seemed unconvinced but reluctant to accept that such a close friend of his was telling such an absurd lie.

"You believe me, don't you Alby?" Newt questioned, his tone soaked in weariness in slight fear that the person that he depended on might not believe his unbelievable words.

Alby pinched the bridge of his nose, heaving a large over-exaggerated sigh as the silence brewed between the members, all eager to hear the response of their leader. The large male swallowed thickly, tongue dipping out to brush across chapped lips before he shook his head.

"I believe. . ." He began, leaning back against the wooden material of the community huts, "that we've all had a long day and that we all need a good rest."

Newt visibly slumped, massaging his temples and pursing his lips as his brow furrowed.

"Now, I'm not saying that I don't believe you, nor am I agreeing to this crazy sight of yours," Alby chided, flexing his hands as he sent the blonde a tense look. "All that I'm saying is that you may have thought you saw this girls of yours, you've been over-exerting yourself lately."

Newt clenched his teeth, his eyes narrowed as he kept his gaze on the ground, heaving a irritated sigh but not bothering to put much effort into proving his point any longer.

"I know what I saw. It was a girl, and she's in that maze," he sneered, gesturing towards the large stone barriers that circled the Glade, "and she's all by herself."

Alby heaved yet another sigh, although this one held a tiresome tone, his lips parted as he thought over his next words carefully but before he even had the chance to reply, another voice was jumping in, a voice that was strong and sturdy but laced in bitter amusement.

"Even if you did see her, Newt. She wouldn't last a minute out there," Gally imputed, shoving the thinner boy in the chest as though trying to snap some form of reality back into the blondes head. "That maze has claimed more than a few of us boys and you think that some girl is going to waltz around and come out unscathed, you're delusional!"

Newt rolled his shoulder, combing a hand through his blonde tresses before nodding reluctantly as he sent a glare in the direction of the larger male, his lips tightening into a tense purse.

"Fine. Whatever."

An echo of laughter filled the air once more, the glowing flame of the torches casting shadows upon their faces.

Newt wasn't about to give up, though. And so, as the Glade members settled down for the night, burying themselves away inside their huts and leaning into the embrace of sleep, Newt made his way to The Maze's entry point, the thick concreted walls still fastened tightly together as he sat himself before it, fingers digging in the tender blades of grass. His free hand held a torch which he swiftly dug into the ground to keep it upright.

And there he waited.

Waited for a sign that he wasn't crazy.

Waited for a sign that this girl did exist.

Waited for a sign that she was alive.

But the Maze creaked and groaned, teasing him, taunting him, as if saying - we'll take her away, just to torture you.
