"Where are you from?" Ratna Raizada asked the lady standing in front of her

"A village near Ujjain" she said softly

"And you want to work here?" Ratna questioned again

"Ji" she replied meekly

"Shukla mentioned that you are good at your work", Ratna spoke to her authoritatively, "But we are a big family, you need to know and understand everyone's likes and dislikes"

The young lady in her early twenties politely nodded her head

"You will be primarily working in kitchen. You will help in cooking and managing the kitchen", Ratna declared

"Ji"

"what is your marital status?" Ratna asked out of the blue

"I am..I am married", she stammered as she hooked her thumb and partially pulled her nuptial chain out of her blouse.

"Hmm. And where is your husband?" Ratna Raizada didn't bother to conceal the sharp tone

"In... in Qatar", she said, her head down, tears swimming in her eyes

"Leaving a young beautiful wife to fend for herself?" Ratna scoffed

"He didn't have a choice", Raising her head up, she answered Ratna defiantly for the first time

Ratna liked the way the girl defended her husband. She observed her keenly.

In a simple red cotton saree with braided hair, and pallu on her head, the girl looked very traditional and conservative in nature.

"Just as Shukla described", Ratna thought, a faint smile on her lips. She had liked the girl at the very first minute.

As Ratna looked at her with piercing eyes, she gently lowered her head.

"Can you start tomorrow?" Ratna asked surprising the girl.

She nodded her head.

"We have living quarters in the gardens that are closer to the kitchen on the back side of the mansion. You can stay there. Shift your belongings today"

The girl politely thanked Ratna.

With a slight nod of her head, Ratna continued, "Hair Prakash has been serving us for almost four decades. He will guide you"

"Oh...what is your name again?"

"Khushi...Khushi Gupta"
