Phil's P.O.V

"Sir, I sorry. There's nothing we can do. We have to pull the plug, " the nurse said. I couldn't believe it. My heart dropped down a well and drowned in the water of tears. This wasn't fair, I was supposed to die first. I made a promise and I plan on keeping it.

"You can visit him before we do, " the nurse said. My tears were already flowing down my face. I nodded not being able to speak. I walked in with my head down and hand over mouth. Dan looked up from his hospital bed. He looked down knowing the situation. I dismally walked towards him.

I sat down and pulled him into a hug. "My precious bear. my precious, precious bear, " I cried into his shoulder. "Phil, it's alright, you'll find someone better, " I pulled away with my hand on his cheek gently caressing it. "I won't, no one is as good as you, " I cried. "He grabbed my free hand and examined the ring on my finger. " we were supposed to have a child and be a happy perfect family, " I said. "We got so far Phil, but you knew this was to come, " Dan said setting my hand back down. "Eighteen years, Phil. We've known each other for eighteen years, " Dan said. "I wish I married you sooner. I wish I confessed sooner, " I said crying even more as if it was possible.

"I made a promise. I'm planning on keeping it, " I said. "What do you mean?" Dan asked. "I promised I'd protect you and keep you living for as long as I lived. I'm not gonna break that promise, " I intertwined my hands with him and held on tight. I could tell Dan was surprised and concerned. "Phil, you can't do that, " Dan panicked. "I promised to always be beside you through anything, " I continued. "Remeber that day, the day We started dating?" I asked. He nodded.

Sixteen years earlier.

They were on a walk around the town. After leaving the building. "I forgot something, let me run and get it, " Phil smiled. "Phil! That's the third thing. Just leave it, " Dan complained. "It'll be quick, " he promised. "Fine, " Dan playfully rolled his eyes. Phil ran back to receive his phone as Dan impatiently waited outside.

Phil wasn't quick enough though.

"Dan, I got it, " Phil said expecting Dan to be there waiting in annoyance. What he saw was unexpected. "Phil, Phil, it hurts so much, please help, " Dan was hunched over on his knees holding his chest. "Oh my God. Dan what happened?!" Phil ran over sitting next to him as he got his phone out to ring the police. "I- I. Guy, came, St-stabbed me. Chest, " Dan couldn't form coherent sentences from the pain. "999, what's your emergency?"  I heard through the phone. "My friend has been stabbed, please, send anyone, " I begged lying Dan down so I could examine his chest. "Is he still conscious?" She asked. "Yes, " I answered as I lifted his shirt. "Phil, Phil. I can't d- do this, " Dan said crying. "It's alright, I'm right here with you, just stay conscious, " I said scared. "Apply pressure to the stabbed wound, " She instructed. I did as told as Dan gasped in pain. "I'll make sure you don't die, Dan, I love you so much, I always have and always will, " I said looking straight into his eyes. "I- I love. Ngg- too, " He said. I heard sirens coming our way. "Oh, thank God, " I whispered relived. I intertwined my fingers carefully with his. I kissed his forehead.

The ambulance arrived. "Sir, please step away, " they said. I hesitated but then backed away. I watch them huddle around Dan. I ran up to an officer and tapped his shoulder. "Can I please ride in the ambulance with him?" I begged. "Yes, but don't get in the way, " he said. I nodded. I followed the people putting him in the ambulance.

I sat in the waiting room bouncing my leg out of nervousness. This is my fault. If I weren't so forgetful.

I buried my face in my hands as tears started streaming. "Sir, can you follow me to talk about your friend?" A nurse asked. I looked up wiping my tears. I nodded standing up to follow her down the long hallway into a room. I sat and she shut the door gently.

"Everything should be alright, " she sat down. "I'm gonna let you know that he got very, very lucky. If he were stabbed just slightly higher, It would've penetrated his heart and stopped it instantly, " I sighed at that. "He will have to stay in the hospital for about a week and a half though, " she explained.  "Can I visit him?" I asked. "Yes, but he is still resting, " she said. I nodded.

She led me to his room and I saw him in bed. He was still very asleep. The nurse left. "Oh, Dan, " I whispered under my breath rushing to him. I sat in the chair next to him. I sat there for two hours until sleep overcame me.

I suddenly was woken up by someone calling my name. "Phil, Phil, get up you spork, " The voice was familiar. I opened my eye slowly. I saw Dan sat up looking at me. "Dan you're awake, " after a short pause of realization, the memories of what happened ran through my head. "Dan, you're awake!" I said louder. He chuckled then groaned in pain. "Fuck, note to self, laughing hurts, " He reached for his chest. "What happened?" He asked. I explained the situation and how it was a miracle that he survived.

"Phil? Can I ask you something?" He asked. "Of course, " I nodded. "What did you mean when you told me you loved me?" He asked. I looked down. "I meant- he cut me off, "Look at me please," I looked back up at him and all his beauty. "I like you way more than a friend, Dan, " I said nervously of his reaction.  "I like you, too, " he smiled. There was a silence in the room. I thought of what to say in this moment. There wasn't anything to be said, but to be done. I leaned in and locked our lips. I lifted my hand to his cheek and gently caressed it.

We pulled apart but our foreheads still connected. "I want to make a promise to you. I promise that I'll always be beside you. I promise that as long as I'm living, I'll keep you alive, I'll protect you from anything and I'll always fight beside you, "

Now.

"Phil, I don't want to leave you, " Dan cried. I pulled him in with tears still streaming down my face. "You won't, a promise is a promise, " I said. "Please don't Phil. You have a whole life ahead of you, " Dan cried. "Yeah, but it'll be a miserable life without you, " I said knowing what my plans were. "What are you gonna do?" Dan asked pulling away. "I don't want to tell you, " I said. "We don't keep things from each other Phil, " Dan said. "I- I have a certain- I paused. " Injection, that'll- Dan cut me off, "Oh, Phil, please, no! You can't do this to me, " Dan cried.

"Times up sir, it's time, " A doctor came in. "I love you, Daniel, " I kissed him. "Phil, no!" Dan cried. I hugged him for the last time ever. "Phil, you can't!" He whined. "Please exit the room, sir, " The doctor said. "I love you, " I said. "I love you, I love you, you can't do this Phil!" Dan continued to cry more than he ever had as I pulled away to walk out. This hurt to see Dan like this. It'll hurt even more to have him gone.

I looked at Dan from the doorway to take his whole image in for the last time ever. I mouthed, "I love you" one last time before leaving. Everything hurt inside me. The only thing I felt was sorrow. This is how I would be without Dan. I walked dismally to one of the hospital the bathrooms. It was luckily empty. I locked my self into a stall. I can't do it here, I thought. I left the hospital. I quickly drove to "our place."

I found the hill with the tree atop of it. I sat looking at the carvings. "D.H + P.H" was surrounded by a heart. I showed him this place a month after we meant in real life. After that, we came here a lot.

I sighed sadly. The sun was just setting as the orange-red ball lit the sky of an orange colour. I pulled out the syringe from my pocket. I set the needle against my wrist. "I love you, Daniel James Howell-Lester," I said aloud injecting it. This would take up to five minutes to take effect. I lied up against the tree and pull out my phone. I plugged my headphones in.

Choice to live my life extended

Muse filled my ears as my last moments past. This was our song. Towards the end of the song, the poison started to take effect. I closed my eyes feeling the pain.

Before you

The song ended as my life did. Every sense faded. The last image in my head before death overcame me was Dan, my beautiful bear, my only reason to live.
