Percy Jackson, bored out of his mind, sat cross-legged on the floor, trying to solve a crossword puzzle. Annoyingly, the words floated off the page. Some seemed to run away, never to be found again, and others just seemed to be mixing around. Regardless, this made it almost impossible to read the questions, and a question that could have been "How many continents are there" could have been "How many cows ate pears." Percy crumpled the puzzle page and glanced around his college dorm room, searching for something to do.
He should have been studying for college exams, which were tomorrow, but thanks to his ADHD, he couldn't sit still long enough to learn anything. Not only that, but the things he needed to study made no sense. He was taking Marine Biology. Why did he need to know what the term for being afraid of bears was?
Percy stood, and walked to the dorm room on his right. Maybe Annabeth would help him study. Annabeth Chase was probably the best girlfriend in the history of girlfriends. Except for Jennifer Lawrence, who would be an amazing girlfriend, but Annabeth was just as great. (Just kidding, Annabeth would probably kill him if she knew that) She didn't even get mad when he stopped listening to her explain things. She knew he hated things with too much words, so she would let him fall asleep while she helped with his homework. (emphasis on helped)
Percy took a deep breath and opened the door, then started to walk in.
"No!" Annabeth's voice screamed. She sounded so terrified, he did as he was told. "My notes!" A girl with honey blonde curls and startling gray eyes knelt under his hovering foot and grabbed a stack of papers before he would step on them. "Perseus Jackson!" She screamed, tossing her notes back to the floor a little farther from the door and walking to the hall. "Learn to knock before you try to stomp on a girl's notes!"
Percy refrained from looking her in the eye and instead looked at the floor. "I need your help," he mumbled, "To study."
Annabeth scanned his face, and she determined he was telling the truth. "Fine," she said, "but you would be able to do it yourself if you got that seaweed out of you head." then she dragged him back into his room by the ear and tossed him on the floor where he had been sitting minutes earlier. "Buckle up, because this is going to be a long, long ride."
-------------------TIME SKIP------------------
Hours later, after Annabeth's many explanations as to why water isn't wet, an old fashioned gong rang, signaling curfew, and for Annabeth to return to her dorm room.
"Bye, Wise Girl," Percy whispered, kissing her lightly on the cheek.
"Bye, Seaweed Brain," Annabeth said, looking at a picture of she and Percy at twelve years old, laughing at their friend Grover getting pantsed in the middle of the picture. Annabeth got a look in her eyes again, one that Percy had seen a lot lately. Now Percy thought he knew what the look was.
Longing.
Annabeth longed for the time six years ago when they were kids. When life had thrown them what seemed like an impossible task. Percy knew that deep down that he wanted that too, no matter how many dumb quests he had to go on. But they were going to be adults in two more years. The way New Rome's college worked, they were almost done. As long as they did well in exams, they would be home free. Then he and Annabeth would have kids of their own someday, together or not. They would have a job, a home, a life.
They would be normal, and Percy wasn't sure he liked that.
Percy didn't know why, but he wanted to keep going on impossible quests with Annabeth. He wanted to keep killing unkillable monsters and send them to Tarturaus, and he was pretty sure Annabeth wanted that too.
