For as long as I can remember I've always had a hard time breathing, back when I was a little all of my classmates would be able to run around for hours on end without being so much as slightly winded where I would have a coughing fit by the end of the day and on some occasions even cough up seeds.
It wasn't ever anything too serious so adults didn't worry too much and whenever I told them about the seeds they would just tell me to stop putting them in my mouth not believing me when I said I didn't. But for as long as can remember Deku as never been too far behind me and he did worry.
Whenever he saw me start to get winded he would ask me to separate from the rest of the group to play with him alone. I knew he did this because he thought I couldn't keep up with the other kids but I hated to see his lips frown and his eyes filled with worry, so I did anyway. Besides I liked him a lot more than any of the other kids they all wanted to hang out with me for the sake of saying they were friends with the strongest kid in class, he was the only one that wanted to get to know the real me so I didn't refuse.
We would sit in the grass as far from the rest of the kids as our preschool teacher would let else and would share comic books and talk about heroes. Deku would laugh and smile bright enough to outshine the sun but the coughing only got worse from there and I started to cough up seeds more and more often.
Until one day over the summer, me and Deku were playing by the stream in the forest next to his house it wasn't a very big stream and it was the deepest we were allowed to go in the forest without adult supervision. But it was a good place to go to catch butterflies and other small animals.
I don't quite remember what lead up to this but Deku grabbed my hand and talked about we'll grow up to become a hero duo. Now Deku has been a very physically affectionate kid but he had never held my hand before this.
With my heart pounding against my chest for whatever reason that suddenly got hard to breathe I pulled away and started coughing into my hands. I wince feeling something stuck and scrap up the inside of my throat. "Kacchan are you ok...?" Deku gave me a worried look. I tried to answer but as soon as I open my mouth I started coughing again starting to feel the texture of seeds and a metallic taste on the back of my tongue. I try to spit a little bit of it out into my hand but the saliva came out as a dark reddish color accompanied by clumps of seeds. There was no way in hell that was good.
Deku's eyes widened when he caught a glimpse of it, "S-stay here I'll go get your mom." With that, he runs off frantically.
"Izu-!" I gasp for air reaching out to him, "wait-!" I clasped onto my knees coughing, even more, making my throat burn spitting more blood and seeds onto the dirt beneath me. I tried to stop coughing but I would hardly be able to get any air into my lungs if I didn't, my hands were shaking as the room started to spin. Tears rolled down my cheeks I thought that would be it, that I would die alone in the forest at the age of four, suffocating to death on seeds and blood.
Eventually, Deku did come back with my mom sadly while I was still on the ground cry hysterically. I honestly thought she would've scolded me for coughing up seeds again but this time she just wiped the blood and spit off my chin took me to the hospital.
When we got there a doctor sprayed something into the back of my mouth to make my throat numb and used a long cotton swab to wipe up a small amount of blood and seeds from the back of my throat. I gag making it hurt even more. "Jerk," I call him, my voice almost too raspy to understand.
He offered a pitiful smile, "sorry about that." Then puts an oxygen mask on my face, "I'm sorry to tell you this Mrs. Bakugou but it looks like your son's developing Hanahaki."
Mom stares at them blankly sitting in the chair next to me with her purse in her lap, "what the fuck is that?"
The doctor scoots away on their rolly stole and grabs a diagram of some lungs off his desk, "Hanahaki disease is a very rare condition that's the result of a very strong one-sided love, I don't believe I heard of anyone as young as Katsuki getting it." He held up the diagram and points at what looks like tree branches with his pen. "It's were seeds and eventually flowers would start to grow in the person's lungs and I guess in this case also in his throat."
