When I get outside, I have no idea where to go or what to do. A light breeze ripples through my hair as I stand on the front lawn. I look to the left; I could walk to the chain store near my neighborhood, Family Fare, but that's the most obvious place to go, and dad would pass me on his way home. I decide to go to the right; heading in the direction of a small hidden shopping centre, just a few streets down.
I've been walking for ten minutes now. I should have taken my bike, but that would make me easier to track down. As I walk, the cluster of small, run-down stores comes into view.
When I get close, the air seems to drop in temperature by ten degrees. Something isn't right. I step into the nearly empty dollar store.A man at the counter sharply turns to face me. His eyes are filmed over-
Is he blind?
He seemingly stares at me, but says nothing. I shake my head nervously and walk over to the snack section. Beef jerky, meat sticks, candy. I set my items on the counter. The man doesn't even look at me as he scans my groceries one by one.His hand brushes mine as I hand him the money. Small, electric tingles rush through my body, and not pleasant ones.
The man chuckles. "You have a long trip ahead of you. Is that all you need?"
His voice is warm and kind, but I don't intend to stick around.
I nod. "That's all, thank you."
