Prologue
At 8:04 pm, Mallory Evans was walking home from the Springfield Central Library. The sun was just starting to set, casting a light evening shadow over the concrete of the sidewalk. She was in an extremely good mood, singing under her breath and bopping her head along to invisible music. Only pausing occasionally to reposition the bag on her shoulder, she was excited to head home and start reading.
That is, until the smoke came.
It came in fast and heavy, rolling over the sky like a fast-forwarded video. Pitch-black, it stood out against the yellow of the sky, but no one seemed to notice. Well, except for Mallory.
Now Mallory wasn't a hunter of any sort, but she knew a little something about the hunter universe and what lay in the darkness just beyond her reach. She knew the protective sigils, the tools needed, and how to kill almost everything. She didn't exactly take the occupation of a hunter, as she lived in her parent's house, went to university, and had a moderately normal life.
The smoke was something she'd read about. She had wished that she would never have to encounter it, but sometimes that's just not how life goes. Thankfully, her background knowledge of the subject may have saved her that day.
Crouching down behind a dumpster, Mallory slipped the bag off her shoulder and unstrapped her sandals, ready to run if needed. There were two men ahead of her, beers in hand, completely oblivious to the sudden change in lightness. Idiots, she thought as she idly watched the smoke approach.
Suddenly, an arc of smoke flew out of the cloud and entered the first man's open mouth. His friend had started to back away and run when the smoke ended, and the man blinked. His eyes were black.
"What the hell...?" his friend started to turn and run away, but it was too late. The man brought down the bottle straight on his head, and he collapsed to the ground, crying out in pain. The bottle came down again and again, shattering into dust until the man on the ground had no life left.
Mallory gave a small gasp when she realized the man would be penalized for something he didn't do.
The demon turned and looked straight at the dumpster, frowning slightly. Smoke flew out of his mouth, the cries of the man lost in the sound as it exited him completely.
She backed away slowly slipping out of her sandals to give her full control over running. The smoke was too fast, coming at her like an impenetrable wall of death.
It stopped short almost right in front of her face and hovered there before turning in a circle and trying once again to enter Mallory. It had no luck.
Seeing her chance, Mallory gathered her library bag in her arms and sprinted down the alleyway back to her house, where she bolted in and locked the door behind her, breathing heavy.
She had just seen a demon. She had almost been possessed by one. And she was alive without a scratch or a criminal record.
Impossible, she thought.
A/N: So this is my first fic, I'd just like to ask that you would tell me if there's something that I could do better with my writing. If there's any mistakes or contenuity errors, please alert me so I can change them! Otherwise, all rights with the Supernatural themes go to the producers and such.
