Chapter Two

I fell asleep at around 2 am last night and woke up this morning for school at 5:30. I don't really get much sleep considering my mom didn't come home last night until midnight and didn't even bring him home like she said she was going to.

I got out of bed and turned on my straightener, brushed roughly through my hair and lined my waterline with eyeliner. I brushed on what seemed like one pound of mascara until my straightener was finally hot enough.

I sprayed three squirts of heat protectant spray into my hair and then straightened my hair, going over each section about three times.

I look at myself in the mirror. I have light brown hair and dark blue eyes, a strange combination considering I am the only one in my family with blue eyes, Carden has dark brown and Britney has hazel.

I'm roughly 5'7" and 145 pounds. It all kind of evens out on my body.

My right ear has peircings going up to where it connects to my head,  and my left ear has only has one lobe piercing and one helix.

I don't have any facial piercings or body piercings but when I turned sixteen I did get a tattoo of a rose on my hip.

I took off my pajamas and put on one of my favorite bras. The band was lacy and the cups were hot pink. It didn't really matter anyway since my boobs were so small I don't even need a bra. My cup size is 32A. When I was in middle school I was made fun of a lot for the fact I didn't have any boobs.  I like it though.

I put on light blue skinny jeans with a hole in the knee from American Eagle. I rushed to find my Guns and Roses shirt but I couldn't find it anywhere so I threw on a black v neck.

I grabbed a pair of socks and put on my black vans and got my backpack on and ran outside.

I waited twenty minutes before checking my phone to realize the bus had already passed.

My mom wasn't home and I was already late for school so I had to walk the whole three miles. It took about a half hour and when I finally got there, police were lined up at the doors and every student and teacher was outside.

I ran to try to find Kathy. I asked everyone and everytime I asked people they got a really sad expression.

I started crying and pushed through all the people until I got up to a police officer.

"Do you know where Kathy is?" I was screaming at this point, no one had answered me and all I wanted was answers.

"She's going to be okay, you don't have to worry. " The officer said, failing to calm me down.

I read his name tag fast. Officer Winstead.

"Where is she?"  I said,  my voice trembling with fear.

Officer Winstead took my hand and lead me to his police car. "Get in."

-

I ran to Kathy's room and opened the door. The nurse yelled at me saying she couldn't have visitors but I didn't care.

"Kathy? Kathy please say something. Do something. Anything. I need to know you're okay."

After waiting with her for three hours I went to the nurse at the front and asked what had happened.

I heard whispering in the background.

"There was a threat made to your school on October 23rd with one anonymous person stating that on November 17th, today,  they were going to come into Van Buren high school and shoot people. Your school did not take this seriously and your friend Kathy along with 12 other students and 3 teachers got shot. None of these wounds are fatal. You have nothing to worry about. Now, please take a seat, Miss... "

"Jeska, my last name is Jeska." I say, carefully.

How could you not take a threat like that seriously?

I start to walk home. I put my headphones in and I begin to run.

-

I walk through the door of my house and my dog Chester runs up to me, excited. I ignore him and go straight to my room.

I open my laptop, type in my password and start to write. I write about a boy who has one month to live and what he does in that one month. I start to cry thinking about what if Kathy's wound is fatal and they got it wrong.

But they're a hospital they can't get things wrong. I think, trying to reassure myself.
