Yoan shielded his eyes from the sun as he saw the Heart Kingdom's capital, Shinzō, on the horizon. The Heart Kingdom had mandatory enrollment into the Deamon Fighting Force at the age of eighteen. While most people disliked this rule Yoan himself didn't quite mind. His family was poor and he lost his father to an illness at a young age. Yoan saw the DFF as an opportunity to get his family in better standings, as he felt if they were, then his father could have received the care he needed. He saw how money and reputation ruled everything around him and decided that he wanted that for himself, if not only for stability and peace of mind. Boys undergo mandatory training at the age of nine until they reach the age of eighteen. Then they are assigned a group and await their first mission from their mentor. Yoan had been waiting for the moment he turned eighteen so he could prove himself and was excited when he got his first mission.

It should have been a simple mission. Look into a deamon sighting south of the capital.  They were trained enough to take down a high D ranked  daemon alone, and together they could take out a C ranked  daemon. What they were met with, however, was two high ranked C daemons. Yoan thought back on how each of his teammates fell after barely slaying the first beast, each death only making the fight more difficult. He reached into his bag and pulled out an object wrapped in cloth. He unwrapped the object to reveal it to be a playing card. It had a purple heart in the corners and an "A" in the center. Looking at the card made memories of the event  rush back to his head.

He remembered getting up after the beast's attack. He had just barely dodged  it. The beast smiled as it readied another attack. It stood over 10 feet tall on its slender hind legs and had a tremendous torso. It bore three horns, one coming out its forehead and two coming out its forearm. It had silver fur that blew with the breeze but were sharp as needles and tough as steel, their  weapons standing no chance after clashing with one of the deamons. This beast boasted  strength like none Yoan had seen before. He looked over the battlefield and saw his three dead comrades. Yoan's attention was then brought to the sky as he heard a yell and sees his final teammate launch at the beast in a desperate attempt to take it down. The beast  turns and grabs his teammate out the air and Yoan used that moment to run and hide in some nearby bushes. Yoan watched as his teammate was ripped in half and as the fear grew he noticed something strange sticking out the ground near him. As he noticed it, it began to glow brightly, attracting the beast towards Yoan. Frightened, Yoan desperately dives for the object as the beast jumped towards him. Yoan grabbed the object and looked up to see the beast falling towards him.
The beast landed with a loud crash and as the dust and sand settled , looked for the remains of his kill. The deamon soon noticed that there was no sign of the human and that the dust and sand was also increasing and not settling. The beast swiped at the sand but to no effect as it  increased, seeming to have a mind of its own. The dust became thick and entered into the deamons mouth. The beast tried to screamed but nothing came out as the dust continued to flow into the beast mouth until finally the beast fell. When the beast fell sand and dust began coming out its mouth until out of a pile of sand Yoan rose.
Yoan stared at the card while he remembered the events before finally  rewrapping and putting it back into his bag.

"They're not gonna believe what I found"

Yoan finally made it into the capital and headed straight to the DFF living quarters. Once there he went upstairs to his best friend Chleo's room. Chleo was two years older than Yoan and didn't share the same feelings toward the Heart Kingdom as Yoan did. Chleo was born in the country far from the capital in a remote village. He lost both of his parents in a deamon attack that destroyed his home soon after he was brought to Shinzō. Many people felt he was unapproachable, as he kept to himself, but was known as a strong mentor candidate. He became one of Yoan's closest friend through their years of training and Yoan looked up to him.
He was laying on the bed shuffling a deck of cards when he noticed Yoan.
