• This man turned out to be the dread pirate Eden
• Eden taught him what he knows, helping him conquer his fear of the sea
• Also worked for a fisherman with a son around his age named Mingi who became a good friend
• His family discovered Eden's true identity and ratted him out, initiating a chase across the ocean in which Eden and Hongjoong ran away on Eden's ship
• In an ambush, the ruthless Royal Navy sent fire ships toward Eden's ship, causing the mainmast to fall on Hongjoong, trapping him
• Hongjoong managed to escape the wreckage and swim to shore, but Eden was nowhere to be found and both were presumed dead
• Abandoned on a small island, Hongjoong survived on his own until he could escape
• Built his ship, the ATEEZ, with his bare hands (a smaller version that later grew into the frigate it has become)
• Not believing Eden died in the shipwreck, he vowed to find him and began to build a team of pirates, starting with his first recruit, Mingi
• Has a signature smirk and a bright red jacket but is of small stature, a fact that always seems to surprise his enemies because of the tales told about him

• Hates fire ships and refuses to use them as a war tactic, even marooned a man for suggesting it once

• Likes to keep his crew full of young, promising men and jumps at the opportunity to promote them

• Known for his bold sense of style and taste for designing things
• Keeps a lot of secrets, even from Seonghwa and Mingi who he's known the longest
• Has a ridiculous and record-breaking amount of money on his head partly for the pure insult of his crimes and partly for spite on the part of the Royal Navy
• An expert at just about every ship-related task, due to the fact that he sailed the ATEEZ alone for a time after building it
• Effective sweet talker, good at appearing innocent
• Doesn't sleep much, and may be found passed out in unusual places at unusual times
• Has a compassionate side that comes out only in certain circumstances and around certain people, but it's very heartwarming
