• Our viewpoint character for the first volume
• His older brother was a ladder-climbing Royal Navy prodigy and their parents were always full of the utmost pride for him
• Struggled to live up to this expectation throughout his entire childhood
• Parents rarely took it easy on him and wanted him to train and follow his hyung's example so they would be set financially for life
• Chronic back pain made it clear that the Navy would most likely never accept him into their ranks and this devastated his parents
• They sent him at the age of nine to work selling fish
• He eventually became apprentice to a local fisherman until he was press ganged into being a powder monkey for Si-Hyuk
• Worked on the same ship as Yeosang but didn't realise it as their paths never crossed
• Slaved away in dangerous conditions for years and became one of the most experienced powder monkeys on board
• Knew everything there was to know about cannons and cultivated an excellent aim
• Became afraid of being kicked out or put on the front line as he grew into his teen years and started to become too old for powder monkey work, a job with no real chance for promotion and nowhere to go
• Always told himself he would return to his family and get a respectable job one day even though he knew in the back of his mind that they didn't want him
• Witnessed the horrors of war first hand at a young age, which caused him to become anxious and uncomfortable easily
• Was "captured" by the ATEEZ in a boarding incident when they were looking for good powder monkeys and he sacrificed himself for a poor new recruit
• Knows Si-Hyuk probably hates him now but doesn't believe the coward will ever hunt him down
• At first was partly put off and partly intrigued by the unusual way Hongjoong runs his ship but adapted quickly
• Became close to Yeosang and San at first, both of them indulging his questions
• Proved himself to be an excellent shot and a good fighter in the battle with the kraken when he saved Mingi and Hongjoong and helped kill the monster
• Boasts the second fastest promotion on the ATEEZ, which San teases him about
• Became more relaxed around the officers after becoming one, but was soon overwhelmed by the amount of responsibility on him
• Strongly considered abandoning ship and almost did so
• Eventually shows his true self, pipes up about his opinions, and becomes a vital member of the team
• Doesn't like to face his fears but pushes everything to the side
• Has a very strong curiosity, especially about other people, and wants to hear their stories
• Respects the hierarchy maybe a little too much
• Ruthless in battle and doesn't allow himself to be fazed by it until he is alone later
• Values his friendships above everything, especially his friendship with Yeosang
• Has a sharp intuition and picks up on potential danger quickly
• Sometimes very intense
• His crazy goofy side surfaces from time to time and gets him in trouble especially with San, his partner in crime
• Knows his stuff and his worth and doesn't take rejection well
• Extremely selfless
