Lila’s POV

Sam and I walk up to the gates of school together, hand in hand, like always. He kisses me on the cheek then walks the opposite direction.

“Where are you going?” I ask.

He starts to walk a little faster and it turns into a jog.

“I’m going to catch up with some mates, don’t worry I’ll see you later!” He calls out.

I shrug my shoulders and walk into school. I pass the half pipe and smile and wave at Ian. He runs up to me and gives me a hug.

“Ian, it’s first thing in the morning and you’re already sweaty, how is that possible?” I giggle.

I wear school uniform because I’m in year 11. Once you start year 12 you no longer have to wear uniform. Ian looks good in his tank top.

“I’m a skater.” He smiles his goofiest smile and flexes his ‘muscles’ jokingly.

“You’re full of yourself.” I say, pushing him away from me playfully.

I start to walk towards the school building before I’m stopped by a bunch of girls who look a lot older than me.

“So you’re the slut who’s now dating one of the hottest guys in school. Sam Pottorff.” The prettiest one snarls.

“Are you as easy as he says you are?” Another one spits.

“What?” I ask, confused.

“We’re going to make you regret ever laying eyes on him you bitch.”

They push me and pull my hair.

“Hey!” I hear somebody shout.

It’s Jess. She and Ian come running over to me and the group.

“Alex! Who the hell do you think you are picking on Lila?” She yells at ‘Alex’.

“Jess? Are you friends with this girl?” Alex asks, seeming very shocked.

“Yeah, actually I am.” Jess states, standing up to Alex.

Alex is much taller than Jess and I. Jess is a tough girl, and sure knows how to fight, considering she’s not as tall as the others. Alex’s group of girls start to hit and slap me and shout in my face. Ian steps in, sticking up for me.

“Back off you fat whore!” Ian shouts, pushing a girl back angrily.

I walk up to Ian and calm him down. I’ve never seen Ian this angry, it scares me.

“It’s okay! Let’s just walk away, she’s not worth it.” I croak out trying to hold back the tears.

We hear Jess shouting at Alex still while we walk back to the half pipe. This time I see Sam skating there as well.

“Sam!” Ian calls out to him.

Sam looks up at him and waves, he stops skating and starts to walk over to us.

“Bro, do you know what just happened?” Ian whisper-shouts, pointing to me.

Sam glances over to me then quickly darts his eyes to the ground.

“Uhh, tell me later man. I gotta go.” He rushes out and runs off.

Woah, what was that? Ian is left standing there confused. He turns back to me and brings me into a hug. I try to ignore the fact that he was sweating and touching me, because he was being sweet and comforting me.

“It’s okay, forget about them.” He says.

I start to cry harder into his chest.

“What did I ever do to them? I think Sam’s been saying stuff about me.” I whimper.

“Nah they would’ve just said that. They’re just jealous. You’re a great girl.” He smiles at me, this time with a bit less goofiness and a lot more sincerity.

I look directly into his bright eyes, he looks directly into my teary ones. Woah, was I starting to fall for Ian? No. I can’t do that to my best friend or my boyfriend.

“Why don’t you get to class, eh? Things can only get better.” He assures me.

I nod and thank him, walking towards the school building. People stare at me with load of different looks on their faces. Amusement, disapprovement, and sympathy.

“Lila, I’ll come with you at interval if you want to talk to Sam?” Jess asks as she walks past me.

“Thanks, that would be good.” I reply.

I hear laughter coming from one direction. I look over to where it was coming from. Alex and her entourage. Great, I’m in for the worst week of my life.

* * *

After the bell for our lunch interval goes I pack up my stuff and go to put it in my bag. A girl comes up from behind me and shoves me hard out of her way.

“Move.” She snarls.

She’s a blond girl. I don’t see her face as she keeps her back to me the whole time. I haven’t noticed her in this class before, but I have only been here a week so I probably wouldn’t. I catch my balance and shake it off. I walk towards my locker where Jess is already standing.

“What are you gonna say to him?” She asks really calmly. Her mood has changed from before.

“I don’t know, ask him what his deal was earlier?” I think.

I shut and lock my locker and we walk towards the half pipe, assuming he’s there. We see him skating, but no Ian. Just a bunch of other skaters. We get to the half pipe and I stand there awkwardly, not knowing what to do or say. Jess smiles at me. That’s what i like about Jess. She doesn’t push me and she isn’t impatient. She’s a good friend. I finally build up the courage to say his name.

“Sam.” I bravely say.

He looks up and give me and unsure look. The boys around him stop skating too. What am I getting myself into..
