As I sat in the airport waiting area, I looked around at all the different people going about their business. Most were eagerly waiting to receive their loved ones, as was i. I looked around the large crowded room, nothing much had changed from the first time I had been here 12 years ago, a fifteen year old girl with her six year old brother in tow, forced to spend a night in a strange a strange place because we were undocumented foreigners. And I hated the reason that we had to leave our country.
"Abella" she shouted my name in a sing song manner, I smiled to myself before turning to look at the only person who could call me by my full name and get away with it.
"Hi Stella, it's so good to see you after so long." I said as I helped her with her luggage so we could leave, but Stella stopped me before I could start walking.
"Wait, let me look at you and your beautiful brown skin. I haven't seen you in forever!" she exclaimed.
I rolled my eyes.
"It's only been 3 months since you left town for your project."
"You know what I mean grandma." She laughed, picking up her bags and speed walking away before I could hit her for calling me grandma, she often did that to stress that I was an uptight person, which I was not.
When we got to my car and I had loaded all her luggage, she engulfed me in a tight hug that I didn't know I need and we stayed like that for a while, just two best friends happy to be there for each other, but she was more than that to me, she was my sister.
As we let go of each other, she tried to push some of my afro away from my face but it came bouncing back and she smiled, her blue eyes glistening because of the sun "I thought I told you not to think too much." She whispered ,giving me a thoughtful look.
"I can't help it sometimes." Was all I said, before I turned to enter the car so that we could head home.
Stella didn't have a place to live in town because 3 months ago, she was given a big landscaping project and she had to relocate, but now she had to come back in order to do some of her work at the main office, which was here in town, so being the good friend that I am, I offered for her to come and stay with my brother and I for a while. It would be nice and distracting to have her over, which was just what I needed. The best part was that her time of stay was not specified, which definitely meant she would stay long.
I was laughing at something Stella had said as we entered the apartment, but I stopped short when I saw my brother lying on the couch, but that wasn't what caught me off guard, it was the strange smiling man sitting across from him. He looked oddly familiar but I couldn't place it.
He rose from his seat as he begun to speak "hello, you must be the sister." He then proceeded to extend his hand to me for a formal greeting, so I walked across the room to shake his hand. He held a firm grip.
"I am, and you are?"
"Just leaving!" he laughed and I couldn't contain the annoyance that was building up inside me. "The young man will fill you in, have a good evening" he said with an annoying smile still on his face.
"Fill me in on what, who even are you?" at this point, I was sure that my annoyance was seeping through my voice but quite frankly I didn't care. I narrowed my eyes at the man's back as he left the apartment.
"Abi, calm down." my brother said, only annoying me more.
"You know I don't like strangers in the house." At this point I stared my brother down, daring him to stay quiet while I silently demanded an explanation.
"Okay, I'm just going to give you two a minute." Stella said awkwardly looking at my brother and me.
Thankfully, she knew her way around the house so I wasn't worried about her.
"Look," he began "that's the man you will be working with for the next 6 to 8 weeks"
