"Mama, why are people burning things in the roads?" I asked. I had to stay in the house all day because of the commotion going on outside and as a fourteen year old girl, hyper and full of life, I didn't quite like it one bit.
"Oh my love," mama begun "the people outside are trying to get other people to hear what they have to say, it's nothing to worry about." She ended her sentence with a smile, but not one of the sweet smiles she usually had, this one seemed forced and shakey.
"So we play outside?" My little brother Paul asked while pulling mama's hand so she could stand and take him outside.
She wouldn't budge though, only shaking her head no.
"Go play! Go play!" He continued.
I got annoyed by his constant whinning and decided to pay my attention to the happenings outside. From our apartment, which was on the fourth floor of the building, I could see everything in the street clearly, most people where angry and yelling, but to no one in particular.
Some were lighting fires using old tyres. And others were running about holding sticks. The whole scene looked like fun to me, and at that moment I decided to go get my friend, who was also my neighbour in the building, and sneak out into the street.
The only problem would be leaving before my father got home, sneaking past my mother was going to be a breeze.
After I had changed into shorts and a sweater, I quietly slipped out of the house while my mother was busy with my little brother. I then skipped to my friend Cindy's house and gently tapped on the door. I waited patiently but nobody came, I tapped louder with less patience, still there was no answer so I decided to shout her name a couple of times.
There was some shuffling on the other side of door before Cindy quickly opened it looking a little relived,She was acting funny but I choose to let it go.
"Let's go and see what all the commotion is about outside." I said, my tone excited.
"We can't go outside the building Abella."
"Why not?"
"My ma said it's way too dangerous for people like us."
"What are you talking about? This is our home, why would it be dangerous?"
"I don't know," she shrugged her shoulders "She wouldn't tell me."
"My mother wouldn't tell me either,so you and I are going outside to find out for ourselves, we are big girls!" I was close to shouting.
"We are 14!" She said giving me a flat look.
"Exactly! Big girls."
We both giggled as she grabbed a sweater from behind the door, we looped our hands together and headed down the stairs and out of the building.
The scene outside was not what I expected, the people running around where either scared or angry. I felt Cindy still beside me so I shook her a little and dragged her further along.
As we kept walking we heard a woman scream to a man in a blue shirt, telling him that this was her country too and he had no right to treat them this way, asking where her kids would go, the man then proceeded to hit her continuously.
We watched them in complete shock, Cindy screamed making the man in a blue shirt to turn to us, as soon as his eyes made contact with mine I blinked.I looked around my surroundings feeling a little confused, Why was it suddenly dark? Gasping for air I sat up and realised I was in my bed.
Why was I having these dreams again after so long?
Bringing my knees to my chest,I put my arms around them and silently cried.
