Can we pretend that aeroplanes
In the night sky
Are shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now
Wish right nowThe rumble of the truck disturbs the silence of the night. Apart from the few whimpers from the rescued hostages sitting in the back. It was a good in and out mission and now we make our way back. I look out the passengers 'window'. The lack of glass gives ample space for the warm East African wind to blow in.
I think of all the times I rode in this very same truck with fellow soldiers. Friends who are now either dead or boarded due to injury. Now there's very few people I get attached to.
A wizz and a flash disrupt my thoughts. I look up at the star filled sky and see nothing.
"What the hell?" The driver, a dude I only ever talked to thrice, straps tapping at the controls. The truck slows down to a halt.
"What going on solider?" I'm emideatly alert.
"I don't know Luitenent. I just lost all power." He tries to start the car but it doesn't even splutter.
"I'm going to check the bonnet." He answers. I sigh as I get out to, to cover him. I was really hoping to make this easy. I tell the hostages to stay put before I get out.
The other two cars that were following us have also stopped.
My driver talks to the other driver about getting the cars started and calling for back up. They try radioing in but the Tokies have no power.
"Luitenent, we have no power, nothing." I crease my brows.
"You think it's an EDM?" A squad member asks.
"No. EDM aren't this silent." I look around at the quit dessert. The moon providing a good amount of light.
"06. How far out are we?" I ask looking over the dunes of sand.
"Ahhh."
"Ahhh is not an answer."
"Four clicks out." I nod thinking.
"Ok get our hostages out. We're about an hour out walking at normal pace. Surround the hostages. Keep your eyes open and be aware of you surrounding. I don't like this at all." My squad do as I say and sooner or later, we're trekking through the silent night. The temperature starts to drop. I hold my rifle closely and surely.
Next thing I know, I'm thrown back onto my back by an invisible force. The people around shout and some solders start shooting. I can't move. It feels like something is pushing down on me.
"Hold your fire. Hold your fire!"
Silence.
Then buzzing.
I can't move my neck but my eyes works and what I see is more then just mind boggling.
Two beams of light shine upon us. Upon me.
Next thing, I'm being dragged towards the light but I can't move.
Like that moment when you open your eyes after a sleep only to find your body unresponsive. Where you start panicking but know very well that it's sleep paralysis but your heart beats stronger and faster, your eyes searching your room franticly for anything to relive you only for you to magicly start moving again but not me.
I move through the sand, the invisible force pulling me towards the light. My mind is angry no. Furious at it's incapability to move
The sand turns into a cold smooth surface. My eyes search for my captures but are greeted with only darkness.
A mechanical but smooth whoosh sound behind me and before I know it, I can move again.
I quickly realise I'm the only one in here.
I feel a G-force then weightless for a second then back to nothing.
I stand and move, with my arms outstretched, to the nearest wall. I find the cold smooth wall that almost feels like it's vibrating and put my back to it.
I hold up my rifle, breathing quit, feeling better knowing I can't be ambushed from behind.
I don't know how long I stand there but another whoosh sounds and a light from my right is revealed, a silhouette stands in it.
Tall, broad shouldered, big head with... horn like things.
Is this Game of Thrones or something?
The figure steps in.
"Stand down and I'll spare you." The figure steps further. I say this again with more anger. The figure steps further.
I put my finger on the trigger and pull.
Nothing.
I check the ammo, it's not blocked or anything so what's the problem?
The figure takes more steps towards me, still bathed in darkness.I keep trying until I just throw the gun aside and take three steps and swing toward the figure, it dodges and then there's a stinging on my neck.
Down I go. Instantly collapsing. My eyes flutter. A flash of blue and I'm pulled into my own mind.
