Hunters heart sped immediately at the sound of the horn. She threw her yogurt cup down onto the table and sprinted to the door. Her hands fumbled around the door locks until the doorknob and the deadbolt were firmly locked. She then stumbled up the steps into her room and dove under her covers.
I'm too young to die. Please take my neighbors! They have more money anyway! Plus, once they're gone I can have their dog! So please, please, please, please don't rob me and then kidnap me and then murder me. I don't want to die toda-
Her thoughts were cut off by someone clearing their throat in her doorway. Hunter hesitantly peeked out from under her covers to see her mother watching her in amusement.
"Mom!" Hunter got up and hugged her mom, "You have no idea how grateful I am that it's just you. I thought I was going to be murdered!"
Hunters mother laughed, "As if we have anything anyone would want to take."
Hunter backed up with a look of mock offense on her face, "Your beautiful and talented daughter?"
Hunter's mom looked at Hunter inquisitively, "I have a beautiful and talented daughter?"
Hunter laughed and sat back down on her bed. "Are you tired? You haven't been back all night."
"Oh, I'm exhausted, but... I'm more interested in the fact that you aren't at school today."
Hunter reached for her phone and began fiddling with it, anything to avoid eye contact from her mother's gaze. "I, you know, slept through my alarm and figured it was too late to go to school anyway."
Mrs. Winters' voice became stern, "And I, you know, expect you to be ready in 5 minutes because I'm taking you to school."
Hunter gasped, but before she could retort Mrs. Winters started walking out of the room yelling over her shoulder, "And since I am tired, who knows maybe I might fall asleep on the road and kill both of us. But, this is what happens when your daughter is too lazy to get up to school! You might quite literally be, the death of me."
Hunter groaned and rolled off of her bed, landing with a thump on her floor. She dragged herself to her dresser and pulled out a random pair of jeans and an oversized shirt she stole from her neighbor. After sliding into her outfit she threw her gross hair into a bun and grabbed her glasses from her nightstand.
She started walking out of her room before spinning back around to grab a pair of socks and her converse. She ran downstairs to see her mom waiting for her by the door.
"Great timing, four minutes, did you brush your teeth?" Hunter's mom questioned.
Hunter groaned and ran back upstairs, quickly brushed her teeth and ran back down. Her mom was waiting in the car at this point. Hunter jumped into the car and her mom began driving immediately.
"Oh, would you look at that! Someone's finally moving into the house across the street!" Mrs. Winters exclaimed with sudden enthusiasm.
Hunter glanced over at the house. Big moving vans were in the driveway and various boxed were strewn about the yard, "Yeah, I wonder how long they'll stay for."
Mrs. Winters sighed, "Well, hopefully, more than a month, I want someone to talk to who isn't crazy."
"As if you're home enough to talk to anyone," Hunter muttered under her breath.
"Now you better lose that attitude before you get to school. I will stop this car right now and make you walk the rest of the way, " Mrs. Winters snapped.
Hunter looked out the window to avoid any further conversation and the rest of the car ride was spent in complete silence. When the giant school building came into view, Hunter's heart plummetted. She really didn't want to have to go through the day at school. Half day or not, it was still a dreaded four hours away from her spot on the couch and a Netflix series waiting to be binged.
"Have a good day at school, sweetie," Hunter's mom sang.
Hunter only nodded in response and dragged herself out of the car. She went into the back seat and grabbed her bookbag from where her mom had put it before closing the door and walking towards the building. She stopped in front of the doors and sighed, "This is going to be a long day."
