Sophie panted as she collapsed on the grounds of Havenfield the moment she materialized after light leaping there. After fighting the Neverseen for what Sophie, her friends, the Black Swan, and the entire Elvin world had hoped to be the last time and... failing, she was exhausted, emotionally and physically. She contained her tears as Mr. Forkle appeared behind her, looking at her with a sad look on his face. He cautiously put a hand on her shoulder. Sophie didn't turn around.

"This isn't the end. We still have a fighting chance."

No response.

"Yeah Foster!" Keefe said, startling Sophie, but not enough to make her turn around. "We'll beat the crap out of the Neverseen and make them wish we just ended their suffering today. Besides, wasn't it fun seeing the Forbidden Cities again?"

Keefe regretted his words instantly, feeling Sophie's emotions growing in strength.

Sophie turned around, finally, to glare at Keefe through her eyes that had become red and puffy because of the tears she couldn't hold back. "You saw Tam there, didn't you?" She said, standing up now. "He was in pain, being forced to fight against us. Against Linh! ...He was forced to fight against his own sister, and now they have her too." There was a moment of silence. "Don't. Don't try to make a joke out of this.... Just don't. Do not joke about me getting souvenirs, or getting to see Amy... or my parents. THEY'RE DEAD NOW!" She took in a breath. "...Because I couldn't help them. Humour doesn't fix everything, Keefe. Maybe you have this... this messed up idea that it does... but let me tell you, it doesn't work for everyone. I would know."

Keefe stepped back.

"We had the advantage this time," Sophie said, ignoring the tears rolling down her face, and keeping her cold expression full of rage. "We knew their plan, but we still lost. And we had two hours in San Francisco to prepare but you just took us shopping. Freaking shopping! I protested, but nobody, nobody agreed with me. Because of that, my parents are dead, Dex is in critical condition and Linh was captured." Sophie couldn't hold back her tears as they escaped yet again. SHe wasn't sure if they were tears for her lost friends and family or for her own self-pity.

"Keefe, you're an Empath. So why don't you care about my feelings? You could feel what I was feeling, why didn't you care?" Sophie asked, not knowing how to feel anymore. Tears were spilling from her eyes rapidly. She looked at him waiting for an answer as if he was her lifeline.

When he finally spoke, his words were laced with hurt. "Foster-"

"Oh, I'm sorry, did I hurt your feelings?" Sophie asked again, her sadness quickly changing to anger. "Guess you wish someone would acknowledge your feelings, huh? My family is dead, hundreds of gnomes and even more dwarves are dead. The last thing anyone on this god-damned earth cares about right now is your feelings. Your hurt feelings are nothing compared to all the people who are actually HURT." The worst part about what Keefe was hearing was that she could feel Sophie's emotions. Feel that she meant every word.

"You still have a family, Sophie. Grady and Edaline. Us." Keefe tried

"You're right!" Sophie said with her voice sickeningly sweet with sarcasm. "I'm so sorry. I'll just use my backup family. My original one wasn't that important anyway." Her tone shifted. "THEY MAY BE HUMANS, BUT THEY AREN'T DISPOSABLE! THEY ARE LIVING BEINGS, AND PEOPLE WHO I CARE ABOUT!" That definitely wasn't sarcastic. Her emotions were a mess, so much that Sophie's inflicting trick she learned from Bronte wouldn't work. Keefe felt her emotions become more gloomy and Sophie turned away. "I know you guys are my family. But two members are missing and I'm allowed to be upset about that. I'm allowed to be sad about my family. I'm just owning up to the reality that we will never win against the Neverseen. Ever." Sophie stared into his eyes as if they contained all of the answers she needed. "I'm sorry Keefe, we're done."

"Sophie, we still haven't lost yet! Our chances with the Neverseen aren't over!"

"That's not what I'm talking about." She cried. "I mean us. Our relationship. I can't go on like this. It feels wrong."

"Sophie, please."

"Goodbye, Keefe." Her voice was a whisper, and Keefe could barely hear her. She turned to walk away before he grabbed her wrist.

"I am an Empath, so I know you don't mean what you're saying." He slipped his hand from her wrist to her hand. "I may have failed reading you're emotions earlier, but I'm reading them loud and clear." His voice spoke with strength, forcing her to pay attention, to look into his eyes.

Sophie squeezed his hand. "I don't want to do this." Keefe smiled, relieved to hear these words. She let his hand go, gripping her forearm, looking at it solemnly. "But I have to. It's not fair to you."

"What do you mean?" But Sophie had run, boosting energy into her legs.

Mr. Forkle had been silent the entire time, and he finally spoke, advising Keefe to give her space, telling him everything would be alright. Keefe obeyed, but he wasn't listening to him. He was just thinking about her final words. It's not fair to you. What had she meant?
