"What do you mean she's hurt?" Zane asked, his voice hoarse. Kim tensed beside him. Zane was hunched over a years-old telephone mounted against a wall, the wire wrapped countless times around his clenched fist in worry. Kim said nothing.
"We think she's okay she just needs medical attention right away. I promise she's going to be okay we just—" the communication cut briefly for a few seconds. Zane could feel his heart beating in his chest, yearning for the muffled speech of Katelyn on the other line.
"Seven. Seven, let me talk to her. Please let me talk to Four," he practically begged, keeping his voice from shaking as much as humanely possible. Kim put an insure hand on his shoulder. Zane shrugged it off, too worried to care and still stinging from the sword that had pierced through his skin only hours ago. Not to mention the piercing headache he had. Static picked up again on the other line.
"Zane? Zane? Are you still there?" Katelyn's voice. "We're too high in altitude to talk—" Cut. "—don't know what's happening—" Cut. "—she's unconscious—" Silence. Zane remained on the line just in case for more than a few minutes. Kim waited impatiently, shifting her weight back and forth between each foot.
"Zane, can I talk to her for a second?" He said nothing, but slammed the phone back into its receiver. Kim jumped, taking a step backward. There goes any chance of them talking to the other group, now. They were lucky enough to be on the same wavelength, and now they just lost them. What were they going to do now? Kim stared at him, prompting some sort of response.
"The line cut. They're in a helicopter." Zane said finally. Kim said nothing, and just stared him down. In the back of her mind, she could hear ghost saying something. As if something was.. off with him. She disregarded her for the moment.
"We don't know where to go," Kim admitted, getting what they both thought out in the air. Zane nodded, slowly and sharply. He's unpredictable, Kim noted, quickly observing how reserved his stance was despite how he'd slammed the phone to the wall only seconds ago. Considering what's been happening, he'd been more relaxed in certain situations. Kim quickly realized there was a reason for that. Rather, a person. And now that person was in danger, for probably the sixth time in the last week. "But.. But the demon warlock is gone, so.. is it.. is it safe to go back to the house?" Kim asked, not sure if she meant it rhetorically or to be answered. Zane's expression changed little.
"It's not a far walk from here." Zane curtly replied. He said nothing else and turned in the direction of the house, causing Kim to flush and run after him. She didn't know if he felt uncomfortable around Ghost, if he felt uncomfortable with her, or if what Ghost was saying in the back of her head had any correlation to what was actually happening. Or maybe it wasn't out of character for Zane to walk away from someone.
They were quiet the rest of the walk. There was tension in the air, not necessarily between them. Kim was sure Zane would explode any minute—again, he was unpredictable—and they were concerned of being caught by the guardian forces.. if they were even a worry anymore.
Zane led them more than twenty meters ahead without pausing before Kim shuddered and gasped, clasping a hand over her mouth.
"Z-Zane, there's a.. there's a body there!" She shrieked, feeling sick to her stomach that there was a dead body only five feet away from them.
