It's night. There are stars overhead and people have long gone inside. The only noise that remained were from restaurants, lively people talking and singing that was a dull murmur from a town a way.
It is different from Mystreet. Nana is especially entranced as she sat in the passenger seat, her window wide open. Her and Zane were on their way home from one of the restaurants for a date, the both of them spent and ready to call it a night. They had driven a while to get to this little town, but what catches Nana's eye aren't the restaurants or the lights or the bright signs, it isn't any of the people themselves..
Out in the distance, way far out over the horizon, Nana sees it. She's knocked out of her thoughts when Zane looks to his right.
"You alright, Nana? Tired?" He asked, reaching over from the driver's seat and grabbing her hand. Nana tilted her head to the side.
"I think I wanna go to the beach," Nana admitted, sitting up straighter. "Do you see it over there, Zane?"
"Huh, yeah. Are you sure?" Zane asked again, rubbing his thumb into her palm. It was almost midnight, but if she wanted to go he wasn't about to say no to her.
A half an hour later Nana isn't sure how long they've been walking. They had walked side-by-side, sandals in hand, for what seemed like miles. But Nana needed this. The last time they were at any type of beach it didn't end well. This was their first time back.
Nana was zigzagging around the beach, not letting her feet get wet while Zane walked carelessly through the water, rising above his ankles. At her giggle, Zane was relieved. It felt like something was bothering her. He could just tell.
He asked anyway. "Is there a reason you wanted to come here, Nana?" He came to a slow stop, and so did she. Her eyes went past Zane and out toward the dark, murky waters. Zane stepped forward and grabbed her hand.
"Zane.." She began uncertainly, finally meeting his eyes. They looked.. sad. "Is it weird that I don't want to go on vacation?" Zane blinked. Not exactly what he was expecting.
"W-What do you mean? You need to take breaks from work.."
"No, it's just.." She looked to the ground. "Nevermind, I was silly for thinking it. I'm sorry." Zane narrowed his eyes and stepped in front of her.
"Tell me, Nana. You don't have to hide anything from me. Say what's on your mind." They've talked about this before. They promised they wouldn't keep things from one another. He didn't want to start now.
"It's just.. it scares me to think about all the terrible things that happened to all of our friends. I used to love the resorts and fancy vacations, but there are so many things we can do here. I know it sounds stupid, but.." She pulled away with a sigh and lowered herself onto the sand. It was soft beneath her, and she fidgeted with a shell that was chipped in the corner in her right hand.
"I don't think it's stupid, Nana," Zane murmured, shoving his hands into his pockets as he looked down at her. He reluctantly sat down beside her, regretting for a second the sand he'd have to deal with later. His car was going to be covered in sand. "What happened was horrible. You know how I felt about all of it.." He trailed off, and Nana looked up at him in anguish.
"I'm sorry, Zane. I didn't mean to hurt you and bring it up--"
"You couldn't hurt me if you tried, kitten," Zane sighed, leaning his head to her shoulder. "I don't dream about it as much as I used to, you know," at Nana's nod he continued, "But I know you're safe, like this." He threaded their hands. "We don't have to live in fear. What happened isn't happening again. And I can't let myself even consider it. What happened was horrible, and made me so so scared to lose you but.. we can't let them stop us from being actually happy." Zane murmured, turning his head to rest in the crook of her neck.
Nana smiled and wrapped an arm around his shoulders, and pulled him closer. "I love you, Zane." She whispered. He chuckled and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"I love you too," He said. A few seconds passed, and eventually Zane mumbled under his breath, "But did we have to sit in the sand? My clothes are filthy."
"You're a party pooper!" Nana teased with a giggle, and Zane rolled his eyes.
"I am not a party pooper," He grumbled. "I just don't feel like cleaning sand out of my car and I didn't see a hose when we walked in--"
Nana didn't let him finish, and tackled him to the sand. Zane sputtered but didn't put up too much of a fight, and she sat on top of him, victorious. He didn't look too thrilled, but smiled when she brushed the hair out of his eyes and rested her hand on his cheek.
"If it makes you feel better, I can clean out your car," She smiled and Zane sighed, shaking his head. He grabbed her arm and pressed a kiss to her wrist.
"I wouldn't make you do that," He murmured, and Nana carded her hands through his hair which was already full of sand. He didn't need to know that. "Especially not now." He shrugged with a smirk, and wrapped his arms around her neck.
Nana leaned forward and kissed him before pulling away, laughing. "You're really covered in sand now." She giggled, and he pressed a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"I think I'd feel a lot better if you kissed me again." He suggested, his voice dropping to an octave that made Nana's skin burst into goosebumps. She laughed again and rolled off of him after another few minutes.
"I think it's good that we came here, Zane." She murmured, threading their hands in the sand again. They were laying next to one another, staring up at the stars. The once low murmur from the restaurants from an hour ago was gone. It was very late, now.
"I think so, too." He said, sitting up.
"Where are you going?" She asked, and he took a few seconds to reply, staring out at the water.
"I'm going to show you that I'm not a party pooper." He said, standing up. Nana tilted her head to the side, curious. Her eyes went wide when he tore off his shirt and tossed it at her.
"Zane! What are you doing?!" She whispered, shocked, turning over her shoulder. "Someone's going to see!"
"Oh come on, Nana!" Zane laughed, already walking into the water. Nana's jaw dropped. Was she dreaming? Who was this person and what did they do with her Zane?
Nana stood and looked over her shoulder incredulously, she looked toward Zane, but he had disappeared. It was way too dark for her to see and Zane's dark hair wasn't helping. Helpless, she shrugged out of her dress and left it with Zane's shirt, her skin burning with embarrassment.
She stepped into the water hesitantly, and it was freezing. She squealed, and off in the distance she heard Zane laughing.
"Come on, Nana," he teased. "It's much better once you're all the way in."
She stepped in up to her hips and sank low, burning bright red.
"Zane, this is ridiculous.." She murmured, trying to find him. She almost screamed when he wrapped his arms around her. "Gahh! Zane you scared me!"
His laugh was evil in her ear, and he pressed a kiss to her temple. She turned in his arms and took his face in her hands and kissed him. He curved into her immediately, though caught off guard, and put his hands to her waist.
He pulled away and she knew he was smiling. "You taste salty."
"You always taste salty." She teased. It took him a few seconds to comprehend.
"Wait.. hey--"
She silenced him with another kiss. Before he could even think about replying, she said, "I love you."
He pressed his bangs back over his forehead with a sigh. "I love you too, kitten."
