“Krystal, wake up!” Yonghwa shouted from downstairs.
Krystal jerked a little at the loud voice coming from his monster brother so early in the morning. She let out a loud groan as she sat up. Everything about her was still the same. Her hair in the morning was still the same; it looked like she was electrocuted, basically.
Her door then flew open and her brother was standing under the frame of her bedroom door. Still half-asleep, Krystal looked at her brother with half-opened eyes, “Krystal, come on. It’s the first day of school and you’re looking horrible as heck.” Yonghwa arbitrated.
“I’m always like this on a school day, what’s your problem?” Krystal calmly asked.
“It’s your first day of high school, aren’t you going to fix yourself?”
“What’s the difference?”
“People usually make the first impression on the first day of school, especially in a new institute,” Yonghwa responded. “Junior students that are new to the school usually are well-groomed on the first few days of high school. If you’re staying there, you won’t have time.”
“I won’t even bother,” Krystal wearily replied.
“This is why you don’t have friends,” Yonghwa teased.
“I don’t need friends,” she replied. However, her reply caused her brother to frown, “I’m fine by myself.”
“Yes, you do. Everyone needs friends. You were friends with your whole grade back in San Francisco.”
“That was before. Not anymore.”
Yonghwa gave up and only let out a deep sigh, “Just get ready soon, then.”
“Yeah.”
Having difficulties to return to her fantasy land, Krystal got up from bed and got ready for school. Unlike when she was in middle school only two months ago, she got ready first before breakfast. After breakfast, she bid her family goodbye and walked out their front door.
Just there, she checked her watch and her eyes widened at the amount of time it took her to get ready. She still had forty-five minutes to spare, which meant she only spent forty minutes getting ready. But that was only because she didn’t even bother to put her hair up or tie it in another way.
Not wanting to wait a long time until the introduction ceremony at her new high school, Krystal decided to take the long way. Instead of a short trip to her new school, she passed through the city square, stopped by on a sightseeing area by the sea and rode through the park until she reached the school with fifteen minutes remaining. That was enough time for her to find the ceremony hall, find out her class and have a seat.
The introduction ceremony only took less than ten minutes, and everyone was sent to find their classrooms. The rule always had been that they can pick whichever seat they want and stay there until there was new seating arrangement, which was why everyone must hurry to their classroom on the first day of school.
A lot took their time on the way to their classes so as to lessen their class time, but Krystal just made her way immediately to the classroom. When she got there, there were only three or four students and they decided to choose the seats by the window. Lucky for Krystal, the very back seat by the window side was free and she went to occupy that seat.
For people like Krystal, she never liked it when someone’s sitting from behind her, or even being surrounded. The back desk by the window was always the best place for someone like her.
As a few more minutes passed by, one by one, the students came flooding in. She realized that apart from one student, everyone else was from her middle school. This fact relieved her as she didn’t want to be uncomfortable with anyone from her class, since she interacts with everyone from middle school every once in a while. There was Luna, Gayoon. Behind them was Sulli with her other friends, like Min and more. Then came in Myungsoo with her cousins Sungyeol and Jieun and his friends. After them was their teacher, ‘Mrs Lee’, and the first period commenced with a revision of basic fractions in Mathematics.
Seated in front of her was Sulli, one of the first students she knew when she first transferred to Korea. Next to her was her step-cousin Jieun, more commonly called as IU, also one of the very first few people she met there.
On Krystal’s first of middle school, IU was absent and so the teacher asked her to sit in her desk for that day. However, by lunch time, IU arrived and was asked to sit in a different desk for that day.
Every lunch time, Krystal would always eat alone, only eating with other people when she’s invited. She felt as if just tagging along with someone might bother them or even annoy them. After finishing her food, she would start reading until it was time for class to continue.
A whole semester had gone by, and not once did they ever witness Krystal laugh. She smiled now and then, but never had she laughed with them. Even in middle school, they only saw her smile rarely, and laugh never. To everyone, she was there, but at the same time, she was non-existent.
On the second day of the second semester, the principal came in with a new female student. After conversing with the teacher, the principal left and Mrs Lee had instructed the new student to introduce herself.
“Annyeonghaseyo,” she bowed, “My name’s Amber and I just transferred here from America,” she continued and gave vibrant smile to everyone.
When lunch time came, the teacher had asked Krystal to show her around since she came from America too.
A few minutes before the bell, students came back to their classroom only to see Krystal conversing with Amber, her book closed and her arms placed on top of it. After Amber finished speaking, Krystal responded. To the students’ surprise, Krystal’s response was more than one word. A lot more than one word.
Heck, she said more words in that one sentence more than all her previous responses combined together.
Since then, Amber had always been by Krystal’s side.
