I made my way down the hall of Shujin Academy, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone in the hallway. Truth be told, I don't make eye contact with people to begin with, but I try really hard not to in school especially. But of course, the world wants to make me suffer.

I don't really know how it happened, but before I knew it, I was on the floor, and my books had spilled out of my bag. Had I tripped on air? Had someone bumped into me? I'll never know. I quickly started to pick up my belongings before anyone could laugh at me. Suddenly, there was another set of hands helping me.

And that marked the day I made the biggest mistake of my life.

I looked up to see who decided to risk themselves helping me. He had messy black hair, fair skin, and glasses. And my God, was he attractive.

He glanced back at me, and then picked up the rest of my books. We both stood up at the same time, and he handed me my things.

"Thanks," I manage to stammer out. I take my books and stuff them back in my bag.

"No problem," the boy said quietly.

"What's your... uh... what's your name?" Damn it, me, stop being such a star-struck dumbass!!

"Akira Kurusu," he replies.

Suddenly, I know why I'm stammering my way through the conversation. He's the transfer with the scary aura around him wherever he goes. Well, I guess I have to be nice... "N-Nice to meet you. I'm (y/n) (l/n)." Jesus Crist, I'm a mess.

"You're in my class," he questioned. Well, it came out as less of a question, more of an observation.

"O-Oh yeah! Haha, I guess I am..." This took such an awkward turn because of me. God, I'm an idiot.

"I guess I'll talk to you more tomorrow?"

"S-Sure!"

"Well then, I'll see you later, (y/n) (l/n)," Akira said, waving his goodbye and walking in the opposite direction.

Oh my God. I just met the transfer. He hangs around Ryuji Sakamoto, for God's sake! He's trouble! But why is my heart racing so fast...? It... It must be the adrenaline. My fight or flight, I rationalize. Yeah, that's it.

If only it was that simple. But of course, it never is.

It turns out, I have more classes with Akira than I thought. Five of my eight- including homeroom- to be exact. I counted, and it's terrifying. Plus, he kept sneaking looks at me all day. Just what is going on in his brain?

I didn't really have any more time to think about it, though, because Akira walked over to me and struck up a conversation. "Hey."

"Oh, uh, hi."

"So, I think I figured it out."

"Figured...? Uh... s-sorry, what?" Could my nerves just not for once?! God, this is getting annoying.

"Why you seem so on edge around me."

"Oh, it's really not just around y-you-!"

"No, you can save it. I'm the transfer, right?" He spat the word out like it was venom. "That's why, huh?"

"No! That's not it, I promise! I'm just really on edge around e-everyone, it's- ah," I suddenly realize what I'm saying.  "Sorry..."

"Don't stop on my accord," Akira chuckled, almost a complete 180 from his last tone of voice. "You're pretty cute when you're flustered."

"O-Oh! Uh, I uh... T-Thanks..?" That was so uncalled for!!

"It's nothing," he said dismissively. "Hey, do you like coffee?"

That's such a strange subject change... "I mean, if it's the right type, I love it, but I'm just really picky on it."

"I know a place that has pretty much a million flavors of coffee. Maybe you'll go with me?" Akira suggested.

"Oh, I'd love to, but uh..." Come on, do you really want to go out with the transfer?! Make up an excuse!! Thankfully, my phone buzzed, giving me a window to think up an excuse. "Sorry, I should see who that is," I appologized to Akira.

Mika: Hey, wanna go to the diner? I need some study help.

Yes! Of course! My God, thank you for your timing!  I thought to myself. Then I glanced back at Akira, who seemed to either be staring at my phone or the floor. I don't know which is more offputting. "Sorry, my friend needs my help today."

"That's fine," he replied, snapping back to reality. "Maybe another day?"

"Y-Yeah," I said, and then rushed past Akira and out of the classroom door, texting Mika back as I went. I could hear Akira say something after me, but whatever he said fell on deaf ears.
