“It’s getting close to that time you know…”

“I don’t think there’ll be much resistance, as long as there isn’t anything close enough to stir it.”

There was a pause as a voice laughed dryly.

“I see… So who is wandering within our range? Surely not a Shadow or a neighboring Crown?”

“I don’t know.” The sound was dripping with a smug arrogance. “The scavengers smell a lion’s kill and they all want a bite.”

The second voice was reproachful. “You can’t let this one slip. You’ve been coddling this pet for too long. You can’t break it in so just do away with it. It has no use if it can’t be controlled.”

The smoky laughter continued. “I will do as I please and you will do well to remember who allows you to walk around without chains. Do you value the ability to think for yourself? Do you value your sight and hearing? Do you value what your life is now?”

There was silence.

“Do not forsake the gift I have given you. I could make you a pawn just like the rest in less than a second. And in less time than that...” He paused, chuckling at the thoughts in his head. “The mind is a terrible place when you can’t control it.”
