"Bless it! Everyone had the same dang idea." Hector slammed his fist on the seat.
"I guess we should go the other way."
"You mean the city? Where the infections are? Downtown is a lot safer."
"Well..." I shrugged.
Hector sighed and turned the other way. He drove the car as fast as he could, making the turns quite uncomfortable.
Police cars and ambulances raced around the area. Cars crashed into each other.
It was as if chaos just burst into a war with... Well, chaos.
Extremely loud sirens came from everywhere. I had to cover my ears. Which didn't help as much as I wanted it to.
"We're almost there... Hang on sis." My brother drove a bit faster.
About six minutes later, we finally reached the city.
Hector had to drive slow due to all of the citizens on the street, running away from something... Or someone.
A truck exploded and burst into flames. People caught on fire.
Everybody was running and screaming with fear.
It was a horrible sight.
Suddenly, a car crashed into us.
Unluckily, it came at top speed.
Our car rolled over nonstop.
It landed upside down.
I collapsed and blacked out.
A couple minutes (or hours, who knows...) later, I woke up in pain. My leg was burning with agony. Cuts and bruises were all over me.
Trying to avoid the glass from our car windows, I sat up and found my brother inside the demolished car right next to me. I shook him. "Hector. Wake up!"
Hector groaned and got up slowly.
I heard another gas station explode. People screamed louder.
"We need to get out of this car..."
He kicked the remaining window with all of his might.
Surprisingly, the car window burst into shards. Hector got out first and lend me his hand.
Behind him, I saw a man stuck in his car. An insane person in a hospital dress ran to his car door and unluckily for the man, the window was broken.
The man in the hospital dress grabbed the trapped victim and shook him around crazily. When he was close to the insane guy, he bit down on his neck.
Blood splattered everywhere. I saw the crazy guy rip out his nerves. I could feel my heartbeat getting faster every second I was in this city.
"H-Hector? I'm scared."
I stammered.
"I know, I know. Just stay calm."
I got up and limped, dragging my left leg.
"What's wrong?" My brother asks.
"My leg hurts."
"How bad?"
"Really bad." I nearly fell over, but he caught me just in time and carried me in his arms.
"We have to get going." Hector says.
Hector was jogging in the direction of the movie theater we used to go to all the time.
The street split into two paths at the theater. Just about five meters away from the the theater, a small fire started.
The eruption of flames caught the movie theater, lighting it on fire.
People ran out of the theater, some were even on fire. I could see their skin start to burn horribly.
A little kid about eight or nine years old was crying on the sidewalk. Smoke and ash surrounded the area.
One of the zombies (or whatever they were) grabbed him tightly by his shoulders. The infected bit down on the side of his neck, sinking its teeth in.
The infected one had fungus growing from his brains. The fungi must have eaten his brain cells and grew through.
The only "human" part I could recognize was his mouth. Everything else was either taken over by fungi or was just deformed.
"Close your eyes." My brother told me, sweeping the hair from my face.
I nodded and closed my eyes.
I really didn't want to see people being eaten and burned alive.
Heat made me sweat like a dog. All of my cuts were burning like the devil's eyes. I held back the screams of pain the best I could.
A couple seconds later, the theater exploded, instantly killing anyone and anything inside.
The loud boom reached my ears and nearly made me go deaf. Hector speed walked to the left.
I could hear a zombie near us, so I opened my eyes in panic. The infected grabbed my brother by his shoulders.
My brother struggled to push off the infected. I decided to name the zombie a Clicker because he didn't have eyes and was making clicking noises, as if to use echolocation to find victims.
Hector took his pocketknife and stabbed the Clicker in his fungus filled head. The Clicker fell to the ground.
My brother continued running. There was a dead end, filled with fires and people trying to flee.
"Dang it..." He went to the side and opened a gate that led to an alley.
He shut the gate right before a horde of Clickers and Runners (the name I gave the fast ones) ran in.
Hector took a deep breath and kept running until he found a dirt path leading to the outside of the city.
