THE darkness engulfs us, cocooning us like a suffocating blanket. I keep my eyes on the remaining slivers of moonlight desperately fanning in through the trees. When the light disappears all together, I am filled with regret. Maybe it wasnʼt the best idea to come here after all. Damn Harry and his convincing intimidation.

ʻʻDoes this frighten you?ʼʼ Harry asks me once again, closing the space between us. Heʼs walking so near me that his arm brushes my shoulder.

I shake my head. ʻʻNo.ʼʼ

ʻʻBecause Iʼm here with you and as long as Harry is here nothing can hurt you?ʼʼ He assumes smugly and I flick his bicep which is too toned to be natural. Like, shit. What does this guy do in his spare time? Bench press trains?

I shake my head again. ʻʻBecause you wouldnʼt bring me someplace unsafe.ʼʼ I explain quietly.

He laughs bitterly, tousling his curly hair with his fingers. ʻʻYep. Iʼd never do anything to hurt you.ʼʼ and something about the way he said that makes me wonder.

ʻʻWhy did you ask me to bring Luke?ʼʼ I glance back at the clumsy oaf fumbling over tree roots and tall grasses.

ʻʻEvery couple needs a third wheel.ʼʼ He smiles and shoves his hands into his pockets.

ʻʻCouple?ʼʼ I scoff.

ʻʻWell...you know what I mean.ʼʼ He flushes and looks at his boots.

ʻʻHey, guys, can you wait up?ʼʼ Lucas calls from behind us, the shakiness of his voice a giveaway of high terrified he must be.

Harry halts and looks back. ʻʻDonʼt you just love the darkness, PukeーI mean Luke?ʼʼ

ʻʻHuh?ʼʼ

ʻʻIʼm not just talking about literal dark, but the mental darkness as well.ʼʼ

ʻʻUm...not really...ʼʼ

Harryʼs lips transform into an almost demented grin, staring into the eyes of Lucas. A cold shiver climbs up my spine, dancing throughout my nerves. After pausing for a considerable amount of time he chuckles. ʻʻWell, this spot is perfect. Letʼs stop here.ʼʼ

ʻʻEr, o-okay...ʼʼ I stutter out, tucking my arms over my chest tightly. Harry digs into his pocket and pulls out a pack of smokes and offers me one. I take it gladly. ʻʻGot a light?ʼʼ

He tosses his burnt out cigarette to the ground and circles it with his foot. He replaces it and brings it to his peach lips. ʻʻYep.ʼʼ He answers, producing forth a metallic silver lighter with some sort of art on the front. He flicks the flame into existence, glancing up at me. With carefree steps he nears me, making me step back.

ʻʻCareful!ʼʼ I advise harshly when he brings the flame literally two inches from my face.

ʻʻPut the thing that does the killing right between your teeth and give it the power to do itʼs killing.ʼʼ He instructs, cheekily quoting that awful book about cancer.

Watching his blazing green eyes warily, I slowly guide my killing device to my lips and gently press down on it with my teeth. He smirks and puts the end of his cigarette next to mine, pushing the fire up to both their ends. They spark to life simultaneously, and something about the situation is terribly erotic. He devilishly smiles, his smoke weaving out and littering my face.

Luke fake coughs dramatically. I had forgotten he was here.

ʻʻTime to get to work.ʼʼ Harry whispers practically on my lips before pulling back.
