The customers had left, the night was getting darker and Sweeney Todd had never felt so anxious in all this life. He wasn't a man to ever feel nervous or even scared, but right now he felt all those things and more. Any moment now Johanna would walk through Mrs Lovett's pie shop door and back into his life again. Finally he would be reunited with his daughter after all these painful years of being apart.
It was a huge moment for him and yes he was very on edge. He wasn't even sure he was capable of loving again, he was scared he wouldn't be able to love her like he once used to. He was hard and cold shallow and mean, who could love a man such as this?Toby was busy helping his mum outside clean up the shop after the customers and he too noticed how Sweeney began to pace in front of Mrs Lovett's work counter inside. He frowned wondering why on earth he was so on edge, it was very unlike him.
"What's wrong with Mr Todd?" He whispered loud enough for Mrs Lovett to hear outside the courtyard. She looked up from where they were collecting up the dirty plates and glasses. She noticed Toby staring at Sweeney and turned to look for herself seeing him pacing back and forth nervously in her shop. She knew exactly why and for that her heart went out to him a little. She knew he was feeling apprehensive, I mean it was his daughter after all who would be coming here very shortly. Her poor heart really did feel for him.
"Never ya mind bout Mista T, now is that all the dishes?" She asked walking towards him with a tray stacked with dirty plates.
"Yes" Toby replies wiping down the tables with a wet cloth.
"Good now come along and be a good lad and go to bed, 'tis late" she said ushering him inside with her to which he groaned and pouted sadly now they were in-doors. "I wanted to see Anthony and his girlfriend" he moaned which caused Sweeney to stop in his tracks and glare at the boy. He didn't like the idea of Anthony and Johanna together, not yet anyway, he wanted her all to himself and not to share. Mrs Lovett noticed the shift in Sweeney's mood and realised the boy was getting on his last nerve.
"Go to bed" Mrs Lovett repeated with telling eyes before placing all the dirty dishes in a sink filled with warm water.
"Ok" he mumbled sadly before heading off.
Now he was gone and out of site Mrs Lovett wiped her wet hands on a cloth. She watched Sweeney standing ever so still just staring at the floor as if deep in thought. Slowly she made her way over to the barber. He looked so anxious, so worried...
"Everythin' will be ok" she whispered softly standing beside him. Even if he didn't want her there she was still going to try and be supportive.
He glanced her way seeing how concerned she looked just before the front door opened suddenly revealing a very hurried Anthony and the very girl that had the barbers stomach flipping nervously.
Johanna kept her head down and stood behind Anthony like a scared puppy. She was dressed as a boy wearing baggy brown trousers and a matching blazer. Her blonde hair was covered up by a cap she wore on the top of her head shielding her face. She looked so timid and afraid that Sweeney felt guilty for putting her in this position. "Thank you so much for agreeing to have us here with you" he said hurriedly, like always Anthony always sounded like he was in a rush. He held Johanna's hand and pulled her carefully into the light.
Both Sweeney and Nellie looked at the girl hoping she would lift her head. But she remained silent and scared.
"Tis no worry dear, very happy to accommodate in this difficult time" Mrs Lovett said softly just before Johanna lifted her head at the familiar voice. Her blue eyes shone in surprise and her sad expression changed into one of surprise.
"Aunt Nellie!" She gasped in pure relief tears forming in her beautiful eyes as she looked at the women that raised her.
Mrs Lovett smiled brightly happy Johanna hadn't forgotten her. "Hello darlin"
