I wake up to the sound of my alarm going off. My head slowly rises from where it was squished between my two pillows. It's 6:00 AM on a Monday — I have to go to school.
I get into my uniform as quickly as I can but I put a lot of effort into trying (unsuccessfully) to style my hair. My bedhead is wild!
I don't have time for breakfast if I want to catch the train to school, so — since my dad is already at work and he can't get mad at me — I just skip it.
I get out of my house, cross the road, and ring the Kozumes' doorbell.
In less than a minute, Kenma (my neighbor, my childhood best friend and my boyfriend of two months) comes out. He's so pretty he makes my heart flutter!
I kiss him on the cheek and I try to hold his hand, but he pulls away. I should have expected it, he's always been shy.
While we walk to the train station together I notice he's wearing a scarf. Weird. It's not yet cold enough to wear scarves.
"Are you sick or something?" I ask him.
"No," he says, and I notice that his voice isn't apathetic and bored like it usually is. "I'm fine."
And here's the thing: I've known him for most of my life, since the day me and Dad moved here after Mom died when I was 8. Nobody knows him as well as I do.
I know he's lying.
But I also know he probably needs time. So I decide to wait until the end of lessons to call him out on it.
Just before our afternoon practice with the team I take him by the arm and pull him aside. "Okay, kitten, what's wrong with you? You were weird this morning. I'm worried."
"I told you I'm fine," he answers, but he looks scared.
He's looking behind me, and I see Lev's approaching the gym. The first-year smirks at me like he knows something that I don't, and then disappears behind the gym doors.
For some reason I can't quite place, I'm pissed.
Kenma quickly follows after him, and after a few seconds, I do, too.
While we're getting changed in the locker room, I see that Kenma doesn't take his scarf off.
"Are you for real?" I say. "You can't keep that on. It's bad for your health."
"You're not the boss of me, Kuro."
"He's right, though," I hear Yaku agree with me.
"Yeah, Kenma, man, are you crazy?" Yamamoto says. "Take it off right now!"
"C'mon, Kenma-san." Lev's voice surprises all of us. "It's not like you've got something to hide."
I can see Kenma is getting nervous under all the attention, and he finally caves in and slowly — very slowly — takes the scarf off.
When I see what's underneath, my heart skips a beat.
"Are those hickeys?" I ask, my voice shaking.
"Kuro," he says. "I can explain."
"You cheated on me?" I'm on the verge of tears now. I feel my heart breaking. I thought he loved me...
I hear Lev's gross laugh and my ears start ringing and suddenly I know who Kenma has been with.
Before I can embarrass myself even more, Kai drags me out of the locker room while Yaku shouts, "You assholes!"
I love my friends.
I hate Kenma.
I hate Lev.
