Born April 28, 1953 in Rochester, New York, Kim Althea Gordon is an American singer-songwriter-bassist-guitarist-visual artist and actress. She is most widely known as singer, guitarist, bassist and founding member of rock band Sonic Youth of which she was a member of from 1981 to 2011. Gordon was raised in Los Angeles, California where her father taught at the University of California. After she graduated from Otis Art and Design College she headed to New York to begin her career in art and also there ended up forming Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore in 1981. Gordon and Moore married in 1984 but divorced in 2011. Due to this messy split between the two former spouses Sonic Youth broke up the same year. Sonic Youth will go down in history as a defining band of the alternative rock genre for their unique and bold songs in both the 1980's and 1990's where they were at the top of their music game. Kim Gordon will also go down in history as a strong, fearless woman in music for her ability to bring alternative to a larger audience and speak a thousand words through her art and music. Famous and inspiring quotes from Kim include: " Women make natural anarchists and revolutionaries because they've always been second-class citizens, kinda having had to claw their way up.", "You can't be a strong or cool woman and be represented except in a harsh way, looking mean and cold and hard. It's like reverse sexism.", "Art and the process of making art was the only space that was mine alone." and " If you don't fit into a certain type, there's a lot of strength in just being who you are."
