" like all good things on you we depend "

The kids stumbled through rubble of cars and buildings. Felicity scanned the remaining area, devastated. Her eyes flicker around as distant explosions boom and echo between crumbling towers. She had to blink plenty because of the ash and soot in the air, she kept her mouth pressed into her elbow in order to not breath in all the shit in the air. She could read the faces of her friends, they were just as disappointed as her.

They walked, the only sound being the rumbles of explosions in the distance, heavy breathing and bike chains rattling against metal. Dariush broke the eery silence,"There!"

Felicity raised her eyes, pursing her lips as the Sherriff's Station came into view. "Thank god," They trekked forward, stepping over rocks and fallen skyscrapers. "Anybody got warrants?" Felicity questioned no one in particular, however, Gabriel still shot her a concerned glance.

Felicity shrugged standing by him as they approached the station, Dariush dropped his bike. He kicked a rock on the ground, scrunching his nose,"Man, this place is trash. Looks empty."

Felicity rolled her bike to a stop and turned to Gabriel as he began to hesitate and speak,"Guys, I dont...Nobody's-uh..." He unclipped his helmet, shaking his hair out and setting it on his bike seat. "You guys go ahead. I'll just stay back and watch our bikes."

Dariush furrowed his brows,"What? Oh, yeah, because the aliens wanna jack our mountain bikes."

"Yeah," Alex agreed, nodding his head,"looters could take him."

"Yeah, I'll stay with him too." Felicity volunteered, also ubuckling her helmet and hanging it on her handle bars. "Two pairs of fists are better than one."

Dariush gave up easily, his eyes flickering over Gabriel and Felicity. "Whatever, man." He threw off his helmet and made his way to the station. The others followed.

Felicity sat down on a rock, pulling her legs close in a comfortable position. Her face scrunched up as she viewed the horizon, the sun close to setting over the barrier line of mountains. The blues and oranges seemed strange, not at all the mundane reds and purples she usually would see. She looked straight up, squinting to search for twinkling stars and blurry, far far away planets.

Gabriel swallowed as he watched her, the shades of the sun's rays filtering into kaleidoscopic strands in her eyes. Her cheeks were still flushed, but her grin had dimmed down to the ghost if a smile; a faded memory he hoped to see again. He wiped his palms on his Jean's and stumbled over the rocks and rubble to sit on the ground next to her.

She gave him a smile, blinking slowly with fatigue. He smiled back, resting his forearms on his bent knees. He sniffled and looked to where she was looking,"Thanks for staying with me. You didn't have to." He told her sincerely, he licked his lips nervously.

Felicity glanced over at him, almost becoming hypnotized. Anyone could clearly see the tired bags under her eyes already forming, not only from sleepless nights of diving into different imaginary worlds, but also from the fact she'd been thrown into an alien apocalypse and given the task of helping these kids she just met travel across the state to save the world. She breathed deeply through her nose, giving him a shy smile.

"You didnt need to be left alone," she could see him flush and felt what rising to her own cheeks, she was quick to jump and defend herself,"we are being chased by a man eating fucktoids, after all."

"Oh, yeah, yeah. Of course, you're so right." They laughed, awkwardly, and Felicity returned her awed gaze to sky, it was slowly changing color with time. If she squinted, she could see the stares starting to emerge-oh wait, no, that's just dust and soot from burning buildings.

"So," Gabriel was hesitant as he started, he felt as though it was going to be too forward. Maybe he was over reacting, but it was worth a shot. Gabriel furrowed his brow, his thoughts becoming repetitive and overbearing; please don't be too straight forward, please don't be too straight forwar-

"Why were you so weird whenever the astronaut lady died."

Goddammit-

Felicity choked on her own spit, coughing up a lung as she turned to look at him, bewildered and wide-eyed. "Dude-"

"Yeah, I know. I swear I was trying my best to-"

"No-"

"I'm just lanky and awkward with every-"

"It's fine-"

"I'm really sorry.'

"It's okay." Felicity assured him with a hesitant smile, "The lady reminded me of someone extremely important to me. I guess seeing her die triggered something inside of me, something I buried a long time ago."

Gabriel stared at the girl's profile. As she admired the stares, he admired her.
