prologue.

She went to put the children to bed for the night, little Anneliese and Maximilian. The two were still young enough that they didn't mind sharing a bedroom. Max was six years old, while his younger sister was four.

"Will you tell us a bed time story?" Her son pleaded, his green eyes which were so like his father's stared at her with excitement.

Arabella smiled warmly at her little boy, and caressed his cheek gently, producing a giggle from him before she reached for something on the nightstand between their small beds. Anneliese was quiet, waiting for mum to tell them a story.

"What story can I read to you that you haven't already heard?" Arabella laughed. The children loved stories, especially when their parents read to them. They had shelves filled with children's books in a room down stairs, but they had already read all of them twice over.

"Tell us about you and papa." The little girl urged now, tugging on her mother's sleeve to get her attention.

Their mother sighed in defeat. "Okay, I'll tell you the story. But so many things happened, it might be a while."

The twenty-eight year old mother went to sit on her daughter's bed and the little girl immediately snuggled into her. The object in her hands was a music box her husband had given her. Its resting place was in the children's bedroom because they loved the music that it produced. And it helped them sleep when she was telling them stories.

Twisting the nob on the music box to let the sound out, Arabella began, "This is the story of your father and I."
