The moon is a white sail,
Gliding across the horizon.
It is a silver coin dropped,
Down a drain from paradise/heaven.
It is torchlight,
Shining joy on the peak of a misty mountain.
It is a silver sequin,
On pitch black card.
It is the soul of a warrior,
Being sucked by a dementor.
It is the eye of the wolf,
Once a cub with a playful heart,
Now a brave determination,
No fear crosses his mind.
It is the whisper of silence,
The greatest music of all.
It is the abandoned silver fish scale,
Of a salmon passing by.
Like the last double bubble,
Just waiting to………… “Pop!”
The free verse poem, ‘The Moon’, is about what the moon means, looks like, and is to different people. It proves that everyone is different and thinks different to others. We need to respect people more and not bully the unique and different. See the benefits in being different to everyone else (which everyone is anyway!) and imagine what a horrible world it would be if everyone was the same. It shows how the moon has been involved in different peoples’ lives and how people associate it with other things. The onomatopoeia at the end (‘POP’) creates a powerful image at the very end of the story that kind of leaves you thinking about what the poem really means-the theme. The continuous metaphors throughout the poem make the moon sound alive and more real to you.
