Pepper
Everything went wrong. She woke up to early, couldn't fall asleep, got up, burnt her toast and accidentally broke a plate. It was just too much, and she freaked out when she spilled juice over her clothes. She cursed loudly enough that her neighbours probably heard her too.
Language. She dropped her toast on the floor.
"Is there anyone here?", she shouted through the apartment. No one answered.
Wow, this is creepy, she thought to herself.
Yeah, why am I even thinking like that?, she heard it again.Maybe she was just imagining all of this, maybe it was not even worth thinking about. She put on new clothes, tried to eat a little before she began to work, or what she defined as work right now.
She had decided to leave the company she had been working with, because she wanted to get better job opportunities and she was currently in the process of talking to many companies in the next weeks.
She had been at bad job interviews, good ones and now it was time to decide where she wanted to go and who had a spot for her, with which she could be content. She got a call from the manager of a company.
"I am really really saddened, but I have to tell you that there is no place whatsoever in our company for you. Your job interview was very promising and we wish you the best of luck on your search for a job, but there is simply no vacancy for you here. Best of wishes though"
"I totally understand that, thanks for your kind words", Pepper said and hung up.
So many calls, the whole morning. But somehow, she couldn't figure out that sometimes, if she was quiet and listened to herself, she heard the voice whisper again. Was she burning out, was this a mental disorder? And the weird thing was, the voice didn't answer anymore most times, as if she was actively avoiding to speak to her, just like Pepper was trying to ignore the voice.
And that worked pretty well, until she went out for lunch and heard the voice again.
This time she was sure that she as going mad.
Look, they are all just being around you for your money, no matter how many times you try to tell yourself they are your friends, they are not. Literally, why would they be your friends? You're just some rich narcassistic idiot, you're just a burden to them and they just tolerate you because of the money you spend on them.
That was not her own voice, that were not her thoughts, never in the world would she think like that. And she was not rich and she did not consider herself stupid. Something was going on, someone or something was in her head. One of Pepper's bad habits was being too curious. She was dying to know, but she knew she would not like whatever this was.
But there was probably some rational explanation behind this. She was not just hearing voices from someone she did not even know, she did not believe in ghosts and she was definitely not haunted. Why should she be?
Her mind was racing, many thoughts running through it, but she did not dare to actively communicate with the person talking to her. She had the feeling that this was mutual and that the last thought was just a break down, emotions that were not able to be controlled.
And then she remembered an old legend her grand mother had told her once. She had not really liked it, because honestly, the probability of having a soulmate was zero. Soulmates, what a weird concept, just one of these stories to make children fall asleep faster with the belief tht the world was a good place and everything would turn out fine. Even if good and evil, heaen and hell existed, not everything could be fine, because that would destroy the balance between good and bad things. Not everyone could be happy all the time, that was a fact. But soulmates were not real and you could not hear their voices in your head... Or could you?
