Clementine opened her mouth but no words came out. A chilling silence filled the room. "Oh..." she finally whispered.
"I'm sorry," Violet said quickly. "I shouldn't have said that, when you're with Louis...and, fuck...what was I thinking?" she muttered, pushing herself off the bed.
Clementine grabbed Violet's arm. "No, please, don't apologize."
Violet's heartbeat quickened as Clem gazed back at her. She was so incredibly beautiful, with her dark, thick hair, chestnut skin and hazel eyes.
"I just...I don't feel the same," Clementine whispered, looking down. "I'm so sorry, Vi."
Violet let out a small laugh. "It's okay, Clem. I wasn't expecting you to, I mean, I didn't even know if you liked girls."
Clementine shrugged. After a few moments, she said, "You're my best friend, Vi. For life."
Violet couldn't help but feel disappointed at "friend," but it was better than nothing. "You're my best friend, too, Clem."
Just then, the door opened and the two girls saw Louis lean in. He raised his eyebrows when he saw Clementine and Violet sitting closely, holding hands, and Clem shirtless. "Uhh..." he began.
"Anyway, I should go." Violet stood up, but leaned in and whispered to Clem, "Don't tell Louis about this, okay?"
Clementine nodded in response. Violet exhaled softly and left the room.
Louis sat down next to Clem. "What was that about?"
"I'm not supposed to tell..." Clem said slowly.
"Oh. Actually, I think I know. I mean, I've seen the way she looks at you."
Clementine couldn't make eye contact with him.
"It's okay if you do, but I have to ask..." Louis lowered his voice. "Do you feel the same about her?"
Clementine shook her head. "No. I only have feelings for you."
Louis let out a sigh of relief. "I'm glad," he whispered.
"By the way, Clem..." Louis laughed uncomfortably. "You're still not wearing a shirt."
Clem realized that he was right and her face warmed. "Oh right, I was just about to go to sleep, I thought I'd let it air out..." She rushed to grab her shirt but stumbled, still not used to a missing leg.
"No Clem, I was kidding, I don't mind," he said. "I just don't want to be rude by staring, but it's kinda hard not to."
"Yeah, right," Clem giggled.
"I'm serious, you're fucking hot," Louis replied casually.
Clem's heart skipped a beat. She had never felt so happy to be with someone. She was a little embarrased by her girly reactions, but for the most part, she didn't care.
"I'd say the same about you," Clem said.
"Oh really..."
They leaned closer until their lips were almost touching. Their moment was interrupted by AJ yelling, "Stand back!" and kicking open the door.
Clementine quickly scooted away from Louis, who, unlike Clem, didn't seem embarrassed at all.
"Hey, little dude," he said, ruffling AJ's hair.
"Hi Louis! Clem, did you see me kick open the door? Just like you taught me!"
"Nice job, goofball," Clem laughed. She opened her arms and AJ leaped onto the bed. She squeezed him tightly and then tickled his sides. AJ squealed and tried to squirm away.
The door was once again opened. Clem looked up, expecting to see Aasim, telling them to shut up.
Instead, Violet stood, accompanied by two older people she didn't recognize, and a face she never expected to see again.
Gabe.
