Chapter 7: A conversation

That same night, Betty and Kevin were having a sleepover at Betty's house. It had been a long time since either of them have had a conversation without the others around. It had also been a long time since Kevin had gone over to Betty's house.

"So, what should we talk about?" Kevin asked in between sips of milk.

"Whatever we want. We can talk about our classes, what teachers we hate the most, if we're crushing on anybody" Betty said.

"Well, I have my first class of the day with the newest couple Archie and Jughead. The day after Cheryl's party I sat down near them and neither of them looked at me. They were sort of acting weird. I'm surprised that my gaydar didn't notice that anything happened. But, I had a strong suspicion that they kissed while they were in the closet."

"I found it kind of strange when they walked past my locker and didn't even wave. It was like they were in a rush or they wanted to be alone."

"I wanted to talk with them about what happened in the closet but then the teacher walked in with Veronica and I couldn't say anything. I'm just wondering why they had to secretly date before coming out to us. Oh and I think that Cheryl knows something... like maybe she had a hidden camera in the closet."

"Well, she was the one that spun the bottle. Maybe she purposely made Archie go first and purposely made the bottle land on Jughead? Maybe she knew that Archie and Jughead were gay before they told us and that's why she got mad when Veronica asked if she was okay."

"Aren't cheerleading tryouts being held tomorrow? Maybe you can ask Cheryl about why she got mad and why she acted tense. If I'm being honest, I don't think that I have ever seen Cheryl look as tense as she did when Archie and Jughead came out to the group."

"Yeah and guess who's the first to tryout? None other than Veronica Lodge. But, yeah I'll talk to Cheryl and see if she'll open up. Anyways, let's talk about something else. Are you developing a crush on anybody?"

"Actually, yes I am. Do you know Moose Mason?"

"Yeah. Isn't he on the football team with Archie?"

"Yeah but I kinda like him. He seems nice and we have three classes together. He's my lab partner in biology."

"You're blushing, Kev."

Kevin went to Betty's mirror and looked in it. "Well, I suppose I am."

After a few minutes they heard some noises coming from Archie's house. Betty and Kevin went to the window and looked out the window, into Archie's bedroom trying to find out if they can see anything.

"Well, well, well" Betty said.

"Would you look at that?" Kevin asked.

"Are they in his room?" 

"It appears so."

Betty raised an eyebrow and sat back down on top of her bed. Kevin sat down in front of her and took a sip of his milk. 

"So, it appears that there is a new music teacher."

"You mean one that can hopefully replace Miss Grundy? One that doesn't prey on boys that are ten years younger than she is?"

"Yes. He seems nice according to some of his students."

"Oh yeah? Who did you hear that from? Veronica Lodge? The girl that has only gone to that school a day and doesn't know how many of the teachers act?"

Betty rolled her eyes playfully. "No. In fact, I heard it from Midge."

Kevin raised an eyebrow. "Midge? As in, Midge Klump?"

"That's the one and only, Kev."

"Since when did you start talking to her?"

"Since she became my lab partner in biology. Kind of like how you never would have talked to or developed a crush on Moose until he became your lab partner."

"I guess it makes sense. So, what is she like? I've heard that she's one of the nicest people you can meet but I'm not one to start conversations with random people."

"Well, she's Moose's ex girlfriend. She's nice and really friendly. So, basically what you've heard is true."

"Wait. Let's rewind that entire statement for a second, shall we? Did you say that she's Moose's ex? As in.. no longer dating? As in... he's single?"

Betty giggled a little. "Yes, Kev. She's his ex which means no longer dating which means he's single which also means you should make your move before some other boy or girl scoops him up."

"I want to. But, what if he says no? I mean Joaquin would always call me "Preppy."

"I think the only reason why Joaquin used to call you that was because you're always looking like you go to a prep school instead of a public high school. Moose knows who you are from Archie. He's friends with Arch, you're friends with him. There's a mutual thing already."

Kevin opened his mouth to speak but was quickly interrupted by the sound of Archie moaning next door. "Do you suppose they're studying?"

"Yeah, they're studying all right."

"What? Bible studies?" Kevin asked as he heard Jughead shout "OH GOD!"

"Nope. I think they're studying human anatomy" Betty said with a smirk.

Kevin looked at her then looked back at the window. "I wish I could do that but I'd be too afraid to even start."

"Oh please, anybody can study human anatomy. Besides, you're way too innocent for what those two are doing."

"You're the innocent girl next door who hasn't had a boyfriend yet. How would you even know about what they're doing?"

"Sometimes it seems like you forget that I have an older sister whose room is literally right across the hall from mine."

"Oh yeah! I forgot that Polly existed to be honest."

"Yeah ever since she moved out to go to this 'farm' it's like she wants no contact with the family. She hasn't called, texted, emailed, commented on an Instagram post or replied to one of my tweets in a while."

"Maybe they're not allowed to have contact with the outside world."

"Maybe...."

There was a silence that was quickly broken by Archie shouting "YES JUGGIE I SEE THE LIGHT!"

"Are you sure they're not studying bible studies?" Kevin asked, pointing toward the window.

"No, Kev. They're studying human anatomy."

"Betty, I'm 16. It's okay. You can say that they're having sex."

"It sounds more like they're on a roller coaster."

"I don't think I've ever heard those two scream. In fact, I don't think I've heard anybody scream as much as I've heard those two scream."

10 seconds later they heard Archie scream Jughead's name.

Kevin and Betty both went to the window and sat on her windowsill looking into Archie's window. What they saw was probably the weirdest thing ever.

"Why is Vegas just sitting there in the doorway?" Betty asked.

"He's probably like us. Wondering why they're being so loud."

2 hours later they finally heard nothing come from Archie's house.

"At last, peace and quiet" Kevin said.

"Thank God. Now we can finally sleep."

"How about tomorrow we ask them how they liked their study of human anatomy?"

"I'd like that and I think that it would really embarrass them. Anyway, we should probably get some sleep if we want to survive another school day tomorrow."

"Yeah. Goodnight, Betty."

"Goodnight, Kev."

Betty turned out the lights in her room and fell asleep. Kevin fell asleep on the floor and all was quiet for the rest of the night.
